We are trying to find any information regarding the male side of my wife's family.

From all the information that we have discovered it seems that her great-grandfather David Berkley HURLEY was born in Ballinhassig in 1844.  We believe that he went to Dublin University where he qualified as a teacher and then went to England where he eventually became a Headmaster.

Although we do not know for certain, we believe that the Berkley may have been his mother's maiden name.

It certainly had some significance as it has been carried down ever since in the male line of  the family.

Although we have been told that the surname Hurley is normally connected to the Catholic faith we believe that during the famine many families joined other churches in order to survive.  This may have been the case with this family but we do not know for certain.

As we are in Western Australia, any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Best regards - Alan

  • Hi Alan have a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Baptism & Marriage records for Diocese of Cork & Ross which includes parish of Ballinhassig.

There is a Baptism 19th April 1844 for a David Hurley in Ballinhassig Parish to Parents David Hurly & Norry Geran(probably Guerin mistranscribed). Sponsor Mgt Murphy.

    Good luck & regards Frances

  • Alan:

I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballinaboy civil parish. There were two David Hurleys listed. One in Ballyheedy townland and the other in Stookeen townland. It also possible that the same person was leasing land in both townlands. These records may relate to the baptismal record that Frances found. See link below.
