Hello - I *think* I've found an ancestor, a James Shortall, who was born in Ballyfoyle. My husband's side of the family has some old written notes that make mention of a family farm there.

Birth date would be sometime after 1800. Possible child Michael Shortall born in 1851 - not sure if he was born in Cork or in Kilkenny.

Thanks!

  • There was a Michael Shortall baptized 12 Jun 1848 in Muckalee, Ballyfole, Kilkenny.  Parents were James Shortall and Mary Hayden married 11 Feb 1836 in Muckalee.  Michael married Margaret Carrigan daughter of James Carrigan and Johanna Brenan from Ruthstown, Ballyfoyle.  Margaraet was one of 13 children and sister to Canon William Carrigan.  Unable to find marriage record or emigration records for Margaret and Michael.  They lived in Chicago and had nine children.  Michael died in 1916 and Margaret in 1924.  I hvae more information on the Shortalls and the Carrigans.

  • Hello My ancestor was Thomas Shortall who was the older brother of Michael Shortall baptized 12 Jun 1848 in Muckalee. Thomas was the oldest in the family and went to New Zealand at about the age of 16. All Shortall's in NZ are related. Do you have any further information going back beyond their parents James Shortall and Mary Hayden? Appreciate hearing from you. Thanks Gerard
