My 3-times grandfather Denis Callaghan was tried at Cork for stealing on 13 July 1848 and transported from Cork to Tasmania (Van Diemans Land) on the “Lord Dalhousie” arriving in Hobart on 14 August 1852. He spent about 4 years on a hulk in Cork Harbour before being transported. There is no mention of his parents on any of the records we have been able to find, but 2 sisters apparently supported him at Court in Cork. Their names are Mary and Kathleen, (Kitty, Kate), and this may help in identifying Denis’s parents. His marriage certificate (Launceston, Tasmania) and his death certificate (New Norfolk, Tasmania) do not mentions his parents.

I believe he was born somewhere in Cork around 1830. So far searches have found .....

History: LDS IGI (19/3/99)
Denis b. 16/10/1831 son of Donal Callaghan & Mary Leary, Inchigeelagh Parish, Co.Cork Denis c. 16/6/1834 son of Jeremiah & Margaret Rourke, Dromtarriff, Co. Cork
Denis c. 20/1/1833 son of Michael & Mary Murphy, Dromtarriff, Co. Cork
Denis c. 1832 Son of Owen & Cate Cronin, Ballyvourney, Co. Cork
Denis c 4/3/1829 son of Jerr Callaghan & Meg Healy, Ballyvourney, Co. Cork

Denis married Hannah Vaughan in Launceston (Tasmania) on 5 May 1858

Hannah Vaughan was born in Ireland (possibly around Macroom) in 1843 and died in Tasmania in 1920. Hannah’s mother, Catherine Vaughan, was born about 1806 and was baptised at Macroom, Cork on 26 April 1806. Catherine’s father was Dan Vaughan and mother Ellene Brien.

Hannah arrived in Launceston on the “Flora McDonald” on 3 Feb 1855 with her mother and siblings. Other information we have of the Vaughans:

Sisters, Hanora and Mary from Cork City arrived Hobart January 1853 in "Louisa".
Catherine Vaughan arrived in Launceston on the "Flora McDonald" in February 1855, accompanied by Hannah, Margaret, Patrick and his wife Julia (nee Murphy), and Kate all from Cork.
Michael Vaughan and wife Julia (nee Sweeney) and Jeremiah reached Hobart in the
"Sir W.F.Williams" on 3rd December 1856. Hannah married Denis Callaghan 1858.

I am hoping to find where and when Denis was born and his parents’ names so that we can expand the family tree and maybe find some Irish relatives. I think the only way I can do this is through finding records of his sisters or maybe through the Vaughans.

The names John, Jeremiah, Alphonsis and Denis (or Dennis) are frequently used for names of Tasmanian descendants.

I know you are providing more information. In the interim,I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ballyvourney civil parish. There were three Callaghan listings. The townland name is the third column. You may also want to look at www.irishgenealogy.ie which has a good number of Co. Cork baptism records.

  • Given naming conventions, where there is one Denis Callaghan there are likely to be others who are related, and it is fun to see someone else interested in that name in Ballyvourney. My only clue to the origin of my GGF Patrick Callahan is his death record listing his parents as Denis Callaghan and Ellen with no maiden name, and his age indicatiing that he was born about 1820 in Ireland. A search of online records for that combination of names and dates did turn up just one - that one being in Ballyvourney. The search is far from exhaustive, so it is only a tantalizing clue for my frustrating brick wall,

My Patrick is first seen in the US in Chicopee, Massachusetts, in 1852, getting married to Margaret Sweeney (b ~1830 in Ireland), who already had a daughter named Johanna (b 1849 in New York). I don't know if Sweeney was her maiden name or that of her first husband. Their first child tiogether was a son whom they named Eugene, which doesn't follow the naming convention if Patrick's father was Denis, but might be a clue to other family names.

About 1855 they moved to Lemonwier, Juneau County, Wisconsin; and about 1865 to Waseca County, Minnesota. These moves closely nmatch those of a fanily of Linnehans, who they might have known from Ireland or might have befriended in Wisconsin.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

  • Note, the death record does not give a surname for Patrick's father either. Callaghan is the version I found in the christening record in Ballyvourney.

  • Hi Muttonbird

I found your post and thought it was very interesting as Denis was my great grandfather and Hannah Vaughan my great grandmother! (Tasmanian connection)

On Denis' Indent it notes he had two sisters Kate and Mary. I haven't pursued this avenue but it may help to identify the area that they came from. I have noted that some family members believe he is... Denis b. 16/10/1831 son of Donal Callaghan & Mary Leary, Inchigeelagh Parish, Co.Cork and others show him from Ballyvouney.

I noted that you have Hannah's mother shown as Catherine Vaughan but I am presuming that the Vaughan is her married name. Some researchers have shown her maiden name as Bryan TBC. What ever happened to her when she arrived in Tasmania?

Like you I would love to know more on Denis and Hannah in Ireland.

    Cheers

    Jen
