Eliza:
I would go to the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie hit the Church Record TAB Search for Michael Hartnett and add Donovan as a second search name and you should get the records which will show the witnesses/sponsors.
Let me know if you have issues with the search process.

Hi. I have been searching for my Grandfather Patrick Donovan b.1818, father Patrick Donovan b.circa1798, and in the reseach effort have located proven records for a John Hartnett, nominated as god father and Mary Donovan as godmother to Ellen Donovan in1869.
This was in England in Redhill, Surrey where the family ended up after travelling from Ireland about 1850
Patrick Donovan had married a Mary Fitzgerald in Bristol in 1857 and subsequently stated he was born in Kilgannie (this I believe was the census taker misunderstanding the pronuncitaion of Cregane on the census form), Mary being much younger than Patrick they had 10 children over a short period.
My recent enquireies have lead me to Bandon where I believe Patrick originated from. Would you or any members have any details that map this family.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I would search the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie They have church records for parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Bandon. Records go back to the late 1790s.
