In England & Wales Census 1871 it states my Great- Great grandfather Thomas Gabriel who was a tailor was born 1841 in Bally Bandon, Cork Ireland. His wife Eliza Lane was also born in Bandon, Cork in 1841. Apparently they married in 1860 in Cork. By 1871 they had four children. From the census it states:
James born St Paul's Cork, Ireland 1860
Thomas born Cork, Ireland 1861
Jane born Cork, Ireland 1867
John born St Nicholas, Cork Ireland 1869
By this 1871 English & Welsh Census the family were living in Glamorgan, Wales. Im thinking the St Paul and St Nicholas may be churches but I dont know what religion they were - I dont think they were Roman Catholic.Sons Thomas and James went to Australia in 1878 and 1881, Thomas being my ancestor. Father Thomas died in Wales but Eliza seems to have returned to Cork where she died in Dec 1890 (I think).
Any further information on this family's time in Ireland would be gratefully received.

Hello Marilyn,
The name Gabriel is quite unusual so hopefully you'll find who you are looking for.
The website www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free site with the church records for half the county of Cork. There is a birth record here for a james Gabriel born Feb 1 1860 in St.Peter and Paul's parish Cork.
Father is Thomas Gabriel , mother is listed as Mary Sullivan. You can see the original record if you click at the bottom of the page. Don't know if that is your james or if Thomas had a second or first wife????

Another useful site is www.askaboutireland.ie where you can research placenames and landholders.
