Thanks to a suggestion for and from members of this list I have confirmed my ancestors marriage:

Joseph Hayes married Johanna Scannell, 23 jan1845 in Bandon. They had childern Timothy, Ellen, Mary, Daniel and Kate in Bandon before departing for the coal/ iron industry in Wales circa 1865. The entire family left Wales for Pittsburgh, PA, US in 1870's.

I would enjoy connecting with other Hayes from Bandon but further to that I am interested in my Buckley family and assume the Hayes from Bandon along with my different Scannell from Kinsale will lead me to a solution. There were 2 marriages between the Buckley/Scannell(Kinsale) and these Hayes in Pittsburgh. There must be some significance to that.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

John (son of a Buckley)

  • Dear John

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Just out of interest, have you tried searching rootsweb or ancestry.com for an instance of the family name? It would be interesting to see if they pop up together in any context. Hopefully someone here will get back to you with a Buckley/Scannall/Hayes link.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you Clare. Although unconfirmed until recently my research focus and hypotheses have been out there a while. But thank you I should refresh as part of my new interest. My Irish have very similar paths although possibly unrelated: Famine > Wales > iron/steel /coal industry dies in Wales > everyone exits for Pittsburgh PA. Although my Hayes came to Wales later 1865 they had same route. The 1851 census in Merthyr almost looks like the boats just emptied from SW Cork. 2-3 families per house, obviously they had ties andI studied those. This led me to the Bandon River Valley where I have now found 2 of the 3. I would be extremely lucky to complete this but there is always hope.
