I have a friend who is 78, born in New Zealand with an Irish father. She has never known the Irish side of her family and would like to connect with her Irish relatives. Her father was Francis Bernard Quinn, born in Castleconnell Town in 1898, father Thomas, mother Mary Anne (or Marianne), maiden name Kellaher. The father was Head Constable in Bandon, Co Cork in 1911. Francis was a surgeon in the Royal Navy.

There were six siblings: Bridget (1891), Mary Josephine (1894), Michael Joseph (1896), Thomas Joesph (1900), Margaret Aloysious (1902) and George Cyril (1908).

I am having trouble finding any information about the siblings so am making a few wild guesses. : ) Michael Joseph MAY have married a Hartnett in Cork and had five children, all with similar names to the generation before, one of which was Francis (born 1936), who MAY have married in 1953 in Cork.

I wonder if anyone could throw some light on this???

Thank you, Becky

  • Here is a link to the telephone diredtory : http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/#

its worth checking - see how you go make sure is on residential  section and Cork - then perhaps you can try and phone any of them with the same first name or if not perhaps checking the papers in Cork as well

The irish genealogy website stops in the early 1900's so thats no good but here is the website

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

If that doesnt work let me know I have a contact that I can email to see if he knows of any that may fit with the family - I'm afraid thats another loon shot though

    good luck

  • hi Maureen

thanks so much for those links and ideas. i have looked through the Cork phone list, have no idea how big Cork is and there seemed to be not so many Quinns, even though an Irish girl I asked the other day said Cork was Quinn headquarters. there are two Michael Quinns so i will do as you suggest and give them a ring.

my friend (who am hoping can be reunited with her Irish side) is moving out of her earthquake ruined house at the moment, (after two years of trauma around the sale, demolition etc of her residential block) and going through all her old things this weekend (according to my mum) so it is a good time for all this to come through ...  : )

again, thank you for your help

  • hi Maureen

i haven't had any luck with any living Quinns yet. my mum spoke to my friend here last week and she was so thrilled that someone was looking into her Irish family. she did think she had a cousin called Patrick. she also said only one other member of her father's family married, which could explain the fruitless search for marriage certificates.

She is ringing me on Saturday morning. She is moving out of her Christchurch home at the moment; the block her cotttage  was joined to was devastated and there has been legal action and all sorts of stress. i've put something on facebook on the Cork Genealogical page and on some other website but no luck so far.

I did find a possible looking family, children of Michael Joseph Quinn, with one of the children called Patrick. When mum told me my friend thought her cousin was Patrick i thought it was the best lead i had.

i did phone a couple of people in Cork last week (before i knew of the Patrick bit) but no luck. there are about 14 Patricks or Pat Quinns in the Co. Cork phone directory.

Do you think your contact in Ireland would be interested in making some phone calls? It is a huge favour to ask of anyone, but i just thought since you were kind enough to mention it that i would ask.

    thanks
