I am looking for information on my Condon family ancestors.  Joseph Condon, my paternal 3x gr. grandfather was, I believe, from the Mitchelstown, Co. Cork vicinity and based on his children's ages, he was probably born sometime around 1800.  Joseph's wife's name may have been Nora Conway, (not 100% certain on that though).  His daughter and my 2x gr. grandmother was Ellen Condon (b. @ 1830, d. 1908).  She emigrated to the U.S. in 1851 and settled in Darien, Connecticut where she married Henry Waterbury and then after his death married a man by the name of McEvoy.

Ellen Condon's siblings, Catherine Condon (1831-1910) and Michael Condon (1845-1911) followed her to Connecticut and settled in nearby Stamford, Connecticut.  Their sister, Mary Condon (1845-1911) married John Garvin in Mitchelstown before 1865 and they had 13 children prior to emigrating to the U.S. (also settling in Stamford) around 1883.  It is my understanding that most, if not all, of the Garvin children went to the U.S.

I was able to locate only three or four Joseph Condon's listed in Griffith's Valuation (circa 1852) for Co. Cork (or all of Ireland for that matter) and all these were listed in Corracunna and Skeheen Upper, just oustide of Mitchelstown.  I have no idea if any of these individuals could possibly be my ancestor (or close relation of), but the odds appear to be good.  Any thoughts, help or additional information would be most appreciated.

Thanks very much,

Brian McKeon

  • Hi Brian,

I am writing from Canada where I, like you, am trying to penetrate the genealogical walls of Ireland!  Not easy is it!

I saw your post on the name Condon and it appears on my family tree (under construction!).  Johanna O'Brien was my 2xgrandmother (1830-1915) and a record I have shows her parents as Mathew O'Brien and Mary Condon.  I know that Johanna married my 2xgrandfather, Gerald Gorman, in Mitchelstown because my parents got a copy of their marriage certificate there on a trip to Ireland in the 80s.  I am not sure where I got this info but I have a marginal note with question mark beside Mary Condon's naming, with 1810 as her possible birth date.

There may have been hundreds of Condons in Mitchelstown during this period so it may be a long shot that "our" Condons were linked.

    regards, Pam

  • Hi Pam,

Thanks for the information on your Condon connections.  Yes, tracing our Irish roots this far back can be a real challenge, but I am always hopeful that a small bit of information can lead to something bigger!

Indeed, there were numerous Condon families in Mitchelstown around this time.  I didn't even know where in Ireland my gr. gr. grandmother came from until just recently though, I only had her father's name from her death certificate.  The more recent info came about through finding records about other siblings, nieces and nephews, etc., etc.  I was very lucky to find what I did!

As I continue looking, I'll keep in mind your information in case I come across anything that looks to be of value.  You never know, we may have a connection.  In the meanwhile, I don't know if you've visited this site (below) for Brigown Graveyard.  There are pictures of headstones from this cemetery which includes many Condon and O'Brien names from in and around Brigown parish in Mitchelstown.  I wasn't able to identify anything for my ancestors, but it's another resource!  Good luck with your continued research!
