I am in the process of tracing our family roots and I am in hopes of finding or sharing some more information.  The farthest I have been able to trace is Philip Meagh (Meagh) who lived in Buttevant.  After a couple of generations in Buttevant I have a few generations listed as being born/died at a Meaghstown Castle.  After that our families next stop is Ballintubber.

I am looking for the location or Meaghstown (Meadstown--currently??) Castle or where this was located if it no longer exsists.

Also looking for anyone with more information about The name Miagh/Meagh/Meade/Mead.

Thanks!  My direct decendants father to son...

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

I have forwarded your query to a volunteer who may be able to offer some advice.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Just had a look at archaeology.ie to see if it brings up that name. In County Cork there are 2 townlands listed as Meadstown, 1 is near Kildorrery, Co. Cork and the 2nd near Carrigaline. If you haven't used this website before it is a good way of locating archaeological sites. Log onto www.archaeology.ie scroll to bottom of page and click on archaeological database, you can download for free. As you input information that you have, information pops up on all the archaoleogy sites as they have all been surveyed in inventory format. I would think that reference may relate to the Meadstown near Carrigaline as there seems to be a listing for a castle on private property as you zoom in on the Ordnance Survey Map.........have a look at that website and see what you think, if it is in Carrigaline, then the Cork Library www.corkpastandpresent.ie should be able to help!

  • Hi Michael~

Phillip's father was Adam Meagh, and was born abt. 1295, so this piece of information should take you back into the thirteenth century now.  My husband and I are going to Buttevant in a few years after he retires.  I don't have my notes in front of me at the moment, but I do know we share everyone up to and including Col. Andrew Meade, who was born in Ireland and settled in Virginia where I was born.  This link is the only one I could find who mentions Adam, and it looks as though the dates you have differ from the ones I have.  My source is http://www.meadewiki.com/meadewiki/index.php?title=Meade_Roots_Working#Generation_No._0  Perhaps you could send me your links so I could compare them?  My email address is bluezwmn@aol.com

  • Do you know the reason you ancesters found themselves in Virgina? They were on the wrong side of the English invasion of William of Orange and were shipped off to the new world to be worked to death in the colonies. John Meade
