Looking for information on my maternal  great grandmother, Honora Denehy.  Born May of 1872.  Parents were Timothy Denehy and Ellen Fitzpatrick.  Possibly lived on New St. at sometime.  Honora left for the U.S.A. in approx. 1885. Do not know who she went with if anyone.  Possible sibling names:   Mary, Nano, Julia and John.

  • Hi thanks for your message.

Do you know the name of the parish that Honora was born in? It will really help you in your search if you can find this out.

Do you have anymore information regarding her emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of entry rather than that of departure. If you knew the city that she entered through you could do a search of the ship passanger records. This could give you more information-and perhaps even an exact point of origin. The US National Archives/Immigration Records may be of some help to you. You can find it at the following link:

    http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Once you have a location there are various resources that you can check.

THe Griffith's Valuation are land records pertaining to Ireland 1848 to 1864. It can be used as an excellent census substitute for the years after the Great Famine as censuses prior to 1901 were destroyed.  Although Honora was born after this was carried out, you may still be able to find record of her parents in it. You can search the Valuation at the following website:

    http://http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

You can also check Church Records once you have the parish name. The Irishtimes website is good as it allows you to check what records are available for specific counties. Follow this link to do this:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/

Other websites that may be of help to you in your research are the National Library and the National Archives found at http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx and  http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/ repsectively.

I hope that this information is of some help to you. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
