I have been tracing my lineage since 2004 and have now come to a full stop with the Rourke's of Buttevant. My Great Uncle, Reginald Gardyne Rourke (b. 4June1889), and Great Aunt, Edith Anne Rourke (b. 12May1887), were both born in Buttevant. I have traced their subsequent lives as of those dates but cannot find any reference to their Father’s ( George Hunter? or Arthur Rourke) birth place – even though his army records show that he was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire in October 1856.
He was stationed at Aldershot in the Royal Engineers (Sgt. Major) in the 1891 census with wife Amy Jane Gardyne and family. His elder son George Rourke was born in Aldershot (18Apr1883) and subsequent kids Agnes Amy Rourke in Brompton, Kent (20Feb1885) and Dorothy Frances Rourke in Malta (7Jan1892).
I’d be most grateful if anyone can shed any light on Geo. (Hunter) Arthur Rourke! The family info. that I have is that he dropped the ‘O’ from Rourke because there were so many O’Rourke’s in the army!
Can anyone help??
Rgds,
Tim Coomber

According to the records from Ancestry, com Amy Gardyne was born in London and George in Birmingham,
Son George was born at Aldershot
Daughter Faith was born in Ireland and so was Reginald
Also the 1881 UK census shows that George was born in Birmingham
George Hunter Rourke born January 1857 Birmingham, father Edward Rourke, mother Elizabeth Holden. His father Edward was born in Ireland 1821 according to the 1861 census of Oldbury Worcestershire. Unfortunately there were 11 people with the name Edward Rourke born in Ireland around 1821 so we can not pinpoint where Edward was born
London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906 about Amy Jane Gardyne
Name: Amy Jane Gardyne Record Type: Baptism Baptism Date: 6 Mar 1862 Father's Name: James Gardyne Mother's name: Frances Amy Gardyne Parish or Poor Law Union: St Pancras Borough: Camden Register Type: Parish Registers -
Very many thanks for your message and info. contained therein - however I would be most grateful if you could let me know how you found GHRourke's father as Edward, born Ireland 1821 and Elizabeth Holden as his mother. I have found them in the past but could not tie the two family's together, therefore ignored them - rgds TC

Hello again,
The source of the information comes from Ancestry.com like I mentioned before the English census records, father Edward is listed on the 1861 census as being born in Ireland 1821.
Just a matter of following the familymembers on several UK census records
The name of Edwards wife I also got from ancestry, com, the marriage of Edward Rourke to Elizabeth Holden in December 1844 in West Brommich.
Some extra information I just found looking back at the census records, the father of Edward Rourke was living with Edward in 1851 in Oldbury Worcestershire, his birth year is 1791 according to the census and he was also born in Ireland.
As the birth years on census records are estimated I had a look if I could find an Edward Rourke with a father George and found this, the only Edward Rourke with father George
Name: Edward Rorke Date of Birth: 24-May-1814 Date of Baptism: 31-May-1814 Address: Parish/District: ANNA Gender: Male County Co. Cavan Denomination: Church Of Ireland Father: George Rorke Mother: Eleanor Rorke Occupation: Hope this helps,

Hi Anne Marie – once again many thanks for the time you have spent on the Rourke’s. I have to say that I remain unconvinced that this is the same family as the birth year for George (being the son of Edward and Elizabeth) is 1853 and not 1857 as noted on his Army recruitment form and place of birth Birmingham and not Oldbury!! although it would not be impossible as Oldbury is only a hop skip and jump up the road from Birmingham.
Any further observations would be most welcome
Rgds Tim
