My GrGf, Lawrence Daly immigrated to USA ca. 1830. He had brothers John (1793/5-1843) and James (1801/09-1843). Lawrence was born ca. 1803-1814. He died in USA, 1905. There was also a Michel Daly (b. ca. 1832), who immigrated to USA in 1859. He may have been a nephew. The family used the name Francis/Frank quite a bit, but I've never been able to find the Ireland-relative with that name. Lawrence's father may have been a Michael.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi Patricia,
Do you know much about their emigration? Dates, the reason why they left, etc.? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Castle Garden, Ellis Island), this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.
A site of interest to you may be http://www.castlegarden.org/ as it has searchable immigration records from 1820-1892 or http://www.ellisisland.org/ which provides a similar service.
Another source which may be useful is https://familysearch.org/ which is a free service provided by the Church of Latter Day Saints.
I wish you luck in your search.
Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.
Kind regards,

Thank you for your response. This family were farmers, and did quite well, settling in Pittsfield, Lorain County, Ohio, USA. They seemed to have come in through Boston, at least Michael's arrival could have been there.
When the early Daly's came over, James & John, they appeared on one Census (1840) and both died in 1843. Lawrence came to town and married James' widow, and that settled the estate. It seemed that James and John travelled together with some people from NY, but their names are so common, it's hard to narrow the records. They weren't very good records in these early times.
I have searched all the records you've suggested...been at this quite a while. Because they came so early, and have such common names, I've never been able to narrow them down. Ellis Island did not exist when they came, and I've no luck with Castle Garden either. There was a Lawrence who came to USA in 1836, but according to the 1900 Census, my Lawrence stated that he'd been here since 1830. He lived to be 98y, so I've loads of info on him. I have their US land deeds, death certificates, wills, but none of them ever say where in Cork they are from.
I'm hoping that as the Carrigtwohil records become available, it will help in my search. The only person who is buried in Lorain County that has mention of a town on his tombstone is a Timothy LINEHAN. The stone says "Garrighcohil, Co. Cork, Ireland". I've been told this is probably Carrigtowhill. It's a shot in the dark, but many people were from Cork in the area around my relatives, but none of them ever mentions their location. I even have access to the family, but these early relatives could not read or write, so nothing is recorded.
Best Regards,
Trish
