Can anyone help me. I believe I have traced My family back to a Bartholomew (Bat) and Daniel Keleher where from Clondrahid in cork. I have been there on 2 occasions and it is such a small place I do not think there are many people living there. Here is some information you may be able to use in your research. My father was born in 1936 he was the eldest his name was Daniel (Donal) Kelleher he had two sisters and a brother Johanna (Joan); Mary Brigitte; and Michael. My Grandfather Hugh (Goff) was married to Johanna Kelleher I do not know her maiden name I was named after my Grandmother who unfortunately died around about 1944 when all her children where young. My Grandfather owned a large amount of farmland, which had a name something like Gurranacopple. All this branch of the family moved to London during the 1960’s the land was stoney and hard to farm for my granddad a single parent with four young children. My dad’s family sold the land during the 1970’s after my granddad died, this land now has other houses built on it with the original farmhouse having been restored. There is a churchyard in the village with lots of gravestones which may prove useful for family research my grandfather is buried there with my grandmother. Unfortunately my Father died in June 1981 when I was 20. My father had 5 children Me Johanna; Margaret; Daniel (Danny); and twins Thomas (Tommy) and Theresa the girls have all had children but unfortunately the boys have never married or had children. My uncle Michael has had two daughters, but no sons Susan and Debbie Susan immigrated to Australia during the 1970’s as a child. My Aunt Mary who died in about 1998 only had one illegitimate daughter who was born in about 1958 /59 she was also called Joan (Johanna) and was put up for adoption. My aunt Joan (Johanna) married a man called Christakos and has had three children Miranda; Helen and Michael, who have all had Children. Unfortunately this now means that my side of the Kelleher name will end because none of the males have had sons. I married Stephen Anderson who’s family originate from Glasgow and have had three children Martin Daniel; Dean Andrew and Hazel Elisabeth. My dad married Margaret Geraghty who was from Dublin, her mum and Dad where Thomas Geraghty a butcher and Elizabeth Best who originated from Northern Ireland I think she may have been a protestant.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The townland is Garranenagappul and it is a fairly large townland--592 acres. There were 32 families in the townland in 1911.Below are two Kelleher households in the 1911 census and five families in the 1901 census.

If you go back to the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clondrohid parish, there were many Keleher records but only a Michael in Garranenagappul  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/clondrohid.htm

Let me know how I can further assist you.

Thank you Roger for getting back to me so quickly. I know my grandfather Hugh had a brother called Michael and he named my uncle Michael. My aunt Johanna also called her son Michael. My great Grandfather was called Dan Hugh Dan. They owned 81 acres of farmland which they brought. This land is opposite the old Clondrohid graveyard behind the Bell pub in Clondrohid. We must be connected to the Michael Kelleher that you mention above. I know there was a Michael Kelleher who was very old and blind who used to be a vintner. I am sure we are connected somehow maybe he was my great great grandfather. I have seen my family's headstone in the graveyard as my grandfather Hugh is buried there. Once again thank you for your help. I have a lot of broken links in my family tree which I am trying to price together.

  • Thank you Roger for getting back to me so quickly. I found my grandfathers family in the 1911 census it was very difficult as they had completed the census in Irish using the Irish version of their name. It is interesting as in the 1901 census they stated that they could not read or right but they spoke English and Irish. But in the 1911 census they said they could read and write and speak Irish only. Do you think this was them protesting against the English language. I know my grandfather Hugh had a brother called Michael and he named my uncle Michael. My aunt Johanna also called her son Michael. My great Grandfather was called Dan Hugh Dan. Just seeing your Saturday message. Yes, I think the 1911 census was a protest.
