I am interested in any families in the townlands of Muingyroogeen, Knockeenatuder and Kilmacurrane but especially my immediate ancestral families of LYONS and MOYNIHAN.

  • Dear jjrlyons

As a starting point, have you looked at the Griffith's Valuation (1847-1864) entries for any of these families? What else do you know about them?

  • Yes, I've examined Griffith's Valuation and looked at the tenure books etc plus Banteer parish register, Petty Sessions records and some contemporary newspapers.  Lots of interesting detail on past generations but no contact yet with any relatives still living in Ireland.

    Thanks for your message,

    John Lyons

  • My great grandparents, Timotht Lyons and Margaret (Twomey) Lyons were married in 1873 and had six children. They lived in Esk (South), Monaveel near Nad & Lyre Co. Cork. I believe that Timothy and Margaret may be buried in Clonmeen Cemetery but I have no verification of that.

Their children were Jeremiah, Patrick, Mary, Abina, Margaret and  Ellen. I have some information on Abina and MArgaret who went to America around 1911 and both died there. Ellen Lyons, was my grandmother and she maried John Lyons around 1914.  I have no information on Jeremiah, Patrick or Mary.

I also have a record of a Nora Lyons who wrote a stroy for Lyre School in 1937 about the area in which she lived, Esk South. I don't know anythig about her, but she could be the daughter of Jeremiah or Patrick.

Any info or guidelines would be welcome.

  • Good to hear from you.  I searched the area widely for all Lyons families and came across those at Esk before finally identifying my ancestors at Muingyroogeen, Clonmeen parish.  I was particularly interested in couples called John & Johanna Lyons and so didn't take detailed notes of the others.  There is no obvious connection in modern times between the two lots of Lyons.

I don't know how much research you have already done so apologies if you have already covered this ground.  1901 and 1911 censuses; church records for Glantane parish accessible for a fee on the Irish Family History Foundation website;  civil registration; Griffiths land valuation records (available free on http://www.askaboutireland.ie/); Familysearch website which contains some of the above information free.

It sounds as those you have seen the local history book "Speaking of Lyre" compiled by Ina Murphy.  The author is no longer living but I have been in touch with her son Billy Murphy who is also the contact for the Lyre Community Association.  He has been extremely helpful.  It is a couple of years since we last made contact but his then e-mail address was: bmurphy883@gmail.com.  His postal address is Glen South, Lyre, Banteer, Co Cork so he lives very close to the area that interests you.  If you make contact then please give him my regards.

Please get back to me if you want clarification of anthing I've written.

It so good to be corresponding with someboy who has such similar interests to me.  Good luck with your searching,

    John Lyons

  • Hello Dave

I have been looking up Lyons families in Esk and Monaveel for a family in USA which seems to be a sort of ancestral home for a number of Lyons families who spread out from there. You can check on the gravestones in Clonmeen graveyard that are recorded on the website"historicgraves.com" by searching for Clonmeen North graveyard.I was involved in some work there for that project. The site is under maintenance at present.

The person I was tracking was a Daniel Lyons from Esk who married a Margaret Cremin in 1890 and emigrated in late 1890 to USA.His wife and newborn daughter stayed behind and the marriage seems to have broken up.His wife and daughter emigrated about 10 years later. Daniel was born 23rd feb.1860 in Esk to Michael and Mary Lyons. who married in 1857.

A timothy lyons married a Mary Twomey in 1888 and had children, patrick, bridget, timothy, john, daniel, hanora.

The free website "irish origins .ie" is worth checking.

    Regards
