My ancestor is Johanna Slingsby who married William Pleace in Devon in 1840. Her father was a shoemaker. I have found no records of Slingsbys in Devon in that period, but found a number Co Tipperary, including William Slingsby, shoemaker, who died in 1872. Also a Johanna was born to William Slingsby in 1816. A William Pleace from Devon deserted from the army in 1836 in Liverpool, and my theory is that he crossed to Ireland and ended up in Clonmel. My ancestor Annie Pleace was born in Ireland around 1838, father William Pleace, and I am guessing that he is the deserter. There is no record of William and Johanna in Devon prior to the marriage, and no record following the marriage, so I am guessing again that they went back to Ireland, as I have found no evidence of them going further afield. Obviously some of the above is conjecture, but I am hoping that there may be records locally in Clonmel, which would confirm it or disprove it. I would much appreciate assistance from anyone who could help.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There were Thoms Directories at that time. I located the 1840 directory but your ancestors were still in England. Why don't you contact the library in Clonmel to see if they can help.
