My great grandfather, Thomas F Geary Sr, immigrated from CloynePriest,  County Cork,  Ireland  about 1850. He married Catherine Mary Rice from Lettram Parish, Kilworth , County Cork 11/21/1854. They lived in Williamstown, Mass and their first three children were born there. They moved  near Albany, NY about 1863.  Albany and Williamstown are about 17 miles apart.

A Margaret Geary from Ireland married James O'Brien from Ireland in Williamstown, Mass in 1858.  Margaret Geary's father was Daniel Geary and James O'Brien's' father was Patrick O'Brien. James O'Brien's death certificate states he was from "Greenland, Ireland". This may have been misspelled.

Anastasia Ellen O'Brien, daughter of Margaret and James O' Brien married Thomas F Geary, Jr.  Anastasia's death certificate states she was born in 1871 in Williamstown, Mass.

The second born son of Thomas F Geary, Sr  and Catherine Mary Rice was Daniel. Their first born daughter was Anastasia.

The death certificate for Thomas F Geary, Sr states his mother was Lillie B Slingerlands, a name of someone who did live in Albany NY at that time.  I have not been able to find and Slingerlands in Cork, Ireland in the 1850's. I believe this is an error in recording.

I am trying to determine if Margaret Geary O'Brien was a sister to Thomas F Geary, Sr, and if so, Daniel Geary would be my great great grandfather. I also wonder if the mother of Margaret may have been Anastasia since both the Geary's and O'Briens in Williamstown, Mass named daughters with this name.

Does anyone have records of a Daniel and ? Anastasia Geary living in Cloyne in the early 1800's and having children with the names of Thomas and Margaret?  Thomas F Geary, Sr named other children Edward, Catherine, John Richard, and Henry. These may be family names.

Thomas F Geary, Sr was born in 1825 per family records.

James O'Brien was born 6/17/1837.

Thank you for your help! Virginia Geary

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    A few comments.

I checked the 1833 Tithe records for Cloyne parish and the only Geary was James Geary.

I could not find a Thomas Geary baptismal record in Cloyne. i did locate a Catherine Rice baptismal record in Kilworth parish.

  • Roger, Thank you for your information. My great grandmother's parents were Thomas and Margaret Rice. Thomas died in Ireland and Margaret immigrated with some of her children to the United States.

    I appreciate your interest. Virginia

  • Hi., I wonder does the Cloyne priest refer to the civil parish of Clonpriest now part of Gortroe parish near youghal.Their is a record in Clonpriest graves of a Daniel and Anastasia Geary of Beanfield. 1866. On griffith a Mary Geary held a house in Redbarn next Townland to Beanfield. Also the Townland of Greenland parish of Kilmacdonagh is only a mile across the strand. It is listed under the Townland of Ring.It does have a Ptk Brien listed in griffith.

  • Thank you! I think your research confirms what I have found also. Where would the Clonpriest grave of Daniel and Anastasia be located? Is there a particular cemetery? And Patrick O'Brien from Greenland was listed as the father of James O'Brien who married Margaret Geary.  I believe Margaret and Thomas F, my great grandfather, were siblings since they were both in Williamstown, Mass in 1855 along with a James Geary.  The only other Geary's were Patrick Geary and his wife, Hannah, in Pittsfield nearby, and Patrick had a father named James.

Thank you again for your help! Virginia

  • Google clonpriest graveyard .     Clonpriest graveyard is near Gortroe Youghal Co Cork.  Daniel Geary is 17 th listed on first page with photo of headstone. Your inquiry should have been transferred to Gortroe near Youghal and not Cloyne.  In the tithe applotment a Daniel Guiry is listed in Banefield civil parish of Clonpriest. Note different spelling. For Ptk Brien Greenland, Birth records would be listed in parish of Ballymacoda Ladysbridge.

Hi! I don't see your name on the list of parish liaisons. Do you live in Co. Cork? We can use all the help we can get in Co. Cork.

  • Willmc, Thank you for your information. Yes, I did find the headstone. I had searched that weblink in 2013, but the Anastasia Geary/Daniel Geary was added in 2014. I have found Geary spelled as Guiry, Garry, and Gearey in Irish and US Census records!  Again, you have been most helpful and I do appreciate the time you have taken. Virginia
