Hi, I am trying to find details of my grandfather Richard Barrett of Glanbrack, Cahermore, County Cork. He was married to Ellen Fuller. Richard died in 1970 . He had 14 children some of whom died early in life. All other children have since died.
I can only find some info in the 1911 census but nothing else.
Thank you
Mary

Hi Mary,
Thank you for your message.
Glanbrack is actually in the civil parish of Ross. A useful website when it comes to placenames in Ireland is http://www.logainm.ie/Viewer.aspx?text=Glanbrack&streets=yes
There is some good information in the census records. If you want to go back further you will have to check civil and church records.
Civil registration records only start in 1864. They are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
You may be able to find William and Margaret?s marriage certificate in these records. This will give you her maiden name.
You can also search in Church records. You can see what records are available in Ross/Rosscarberry Catholic parish at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Roscarberry&churchid=93
These have a quite a late start date. However, in the19th century new Catholic parishes were created so starting dates can sometimes be misleading. Many parishes changed their geographical spread so you may find earlier records relating to your family in the records of adjoining parishes. Here is a map of Catholic parishes in the area
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/corkswrc.htm
Irish Genealogy have started a project to upload church records to their website free of charge. It is an ongoing project so only a few counties have been uploaded so far, and only records from the Diocese of Cork and Ross in Co. Cork. Fortunately, the parishes of Ross and Rosscarberry are part of this diocese. You can search these records here:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
To see if there were Barrett?s in the area earlier in the 19th century you can check the land records pertaining to Ireland. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find helpful are:
Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at ). www.failteromhat.com
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

You could also try contacting Skibbereen Heritage Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: skibbheritage1@gmail.com
I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
