Hi there!
I am a Canadian researching my Grandfathers Irish side and I think I'm at a point where I think I may have to go to Ireland myself to figure things out :)

My Grandad's Grandad is Robert Warner Dalton, born in Cork City in roughtly 1856 according to the 1901 and 1911 Irish census. He was married in Gateshead, England (was a seagoing engineer for mercantile marine) and had a few kids before moving back to Ireland in 1892 to work at the guiness brewery. I have ordered the marriage certificate and found Robert Warner's fathers name is Robert and he was possibly a baker (though it's hard to make out what the word says exactly lol). Robert Warner had two sisters he lived with in England, Anne (b ~1841) and Frances (b~1845), both born in Ireland (no mention of where exactly).

I can't find Robert Warners birth record, nor any other Robert Daltons in the cork city area that could be who I am looking for. I'm aware that Robert Warner and his wife were cousins to some degree, his wife's mom, Mary Ann Dalton,  being from the Rock Hill area in the Clonfert Parish (I will post there as well haha). I dont have a lot of hope for finding records at this point, but I am hoping to find possible relatives or people who may have some knowledge of our family in the area. Thanks so much for any and all information!

  • Civil registration of births commenced in 1864, so there would be no birth record for Robert, you would have to search for a possible baptism record instead.

I presume this is your Robert on the 1901 and 1911 census returns ... all the family are shown as Church of Ireland. RootsIreland (pay-website) has transcripts of records for parts of North East Co. Cork, including a number of Church of Ireland parishes, but RootsIreland dont have any for Cork City as far as I can see. Most of the surviving historic Church of Ireland registers are held by the Representative Church Body Library in Co. Dublin,  a manual search of the various Cork City parishes would take some time. A small number of parishes around Ireland have been transcribed by the RCBL but only include some later records for Cork City or County so far - see Anglican Record Project

The RCBL website has a link to a document showing record status of all parishes - see here (the Cork city parishes start on page 30)

p.s. I had a quick scan for any Robert Daltons, bakers or otherwise listed for Cork in Slater's 1845 Directory, but no sign of any. Might be worth checking for other c1850s directories. Having a possible location, i.e. parish, might narrow the search for you. There's a good collection of Cork directories on the Cork City Libraries website.

  • Hi Nat

It might be worth your while getting in touch with the archivist at the Guinness Brewery to see if they hold any records about him. The info may just add colour to what you already know but it would be good to have all the same.

You can contact the archivist HERE

    Best wishes

  • Thanks! I did find a few mentions of a baker named Robert in some newspaper archives awhile back, but so far no way to show they are the same person haha. I will keep picking around a bit and go through whatever other directories I can find. It looks like the records I need were lost in the fire :(

Clare, do you know if the Guiness Brewery has more information than what is offered on their website? I did find him on the website but didn't find anything new. I dont want to bother them if thats the extent of the information they have.

I am likely coming out to Ireland in May with my Granny so maybe we will have a chance to peek around a bit :P Thanks for your suggestions!

  • I'm not sure if the Guinness website info is representative of all that they have. The archivist there was been in place for quite a while and has a good records system in  place so it wouldn't be too much bother for them to check out their records. It might yield a little more info - tell them what you have already sourced and they will know if anything further is available before they search at all.

    All the best
