My grandfather, Joseph Spillane, was born on February 8, 1877 in Crosshaven.

On later records he indicated his parents' names were John and Ellen Spillane.

Are there death or cemetery records for John and/or Ellen in the period following 1877.

I know he had a brother James who was just a bit older than he.

I know he left home at the age of 14, as a cabin boy, and went on to serve 12 years in the British navy.

Crosshaven is in the Kinsale registration district. I looked for death index records and found two possible records. One for an Ellen born 1844 and died 1918 and the second for an Ellen born 1856 and died 1921. To get a copy of one or both records, contact the GRO www.groireland.ie  Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death, registration district and volume and page number. Maybe you can give them both records and ask for the Ellen from Crosshaven. Costs 4 euros per record.
