My great-grandfather, Joseph Francis Spillane, was an orphan in Crosshaven.  He attended the Myrtleville National School.

I believe his mother was Ellen Spillane, and that she died in the Work House while he was still a very young boy.

Would there be any record if Joseph also lived at the Work House?

  • There are some records for the Kinsale workhouse, which covered Crosshaven, held by Cork City & County Archive including Admission & Discharge Books. They do have some limited collections online, a personal visit is required to view most of the records There are details, maps and photos of Kinsale workhouse on Peter Higginbotham's Workhouses Website.

Do you have an estimated year of birth for Joseph ?
Spillane is quite a common surname in the county but it might be possible to locate a death cert for Ellen if you can estimate roughly when she may have died. The registration district for the area is also named Kinsale. There's only one death for that name that I see in the Kinsale district between 1880 and 1890, but possibly a little old ?, as this Ellen was reported age of 65 (born c1823) when she died in 1888.
