Joseph Spillane, born about 1877, was s student at the Myrtleville/Crosshaven National School from 1885 to 1890.
He was listed as an "orphan".

I have been unsuccessful in determining who his parents might have been or where he would have been living when he was going to school as an orphan.

In later years when he immigrated to Massachusetts, the records indicate a relationship with a brother, James who apparently came to America years before Joseph.

James refers to family in Clonakilty.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hello Judy. Did Joseph marry? If so do you have his marriage record as it may show his fathers name. Also do you have a death record as this may give details of his parents.

I had a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie for the Diocese of Cork & Ross which covers Clonakilty but the only record I found was for a JAMES SPILLANE in the parish of Ovens & Aglis Diocese of Cork & Ross on 28th November 1875. Parents James Spillane & Eliza Maloney.

If Joseph was an Orphan perhaps his parent/parents had died but I imagine if he came from the Clonakilty area he wouldnt be in Crosshaven which would be nearer to Cork City. Do you have the name of the School he was in?

www.nationalarchives.ie has a James Spillane in Clonakilty in 1901 census - maybe connected to your Spillanes & the relatives mentioned for this area.
Do you know denomination of your family?

  • Thank you Frances for replying.

Yes I do have Joseph Spillane's marriage certificate.  He lists his father as John Spillane, a sailor.

His death certificate repeats the John Spillane as father, and adds Ellen Spillane as mother.  I have had some suspicions about that one.  It seemed a big coincidence that both he and his wife had parents named John and Ellen, I wasn't sure I could trust that bit of info.

His birth date is also questionable.  Each time he was asked to supply a birth date, it changed.  Varied between 1877 and 1881 and always a different month and day.  My guess was that he might not actually have known when it was and just made up an answer when he had to supply such information.  His school record does not list any date of birth.

The school was the Myrtleville/Crosshaven National School and I have a copy of his register from that school.  Entrance 1885.  Age at last birthday:  blank.   Religion:  Roman Catholic.  Residence:  Crosshaven.  Parent:  Orphan.  Last school attended:  Crosshaven, County Cork, Level I.   Perhaps because he was an orphan, his attendance was very erratic.  1886 - 10 days.  1887 - 101 days.  1888 - 175 days.  1889 - 183 days.  Struck off record in March of 1890.

If this information suggests a new avenue to pursue . . . I thank you.

  • There is a Tree online (maybe yours) which gives Joseph marriage in Douglas Cork in December 1900. Do you have his ship passenger record. Also James death cert may give parents names & area they came from. I would have thought that his school record would have his place of residence on it. Rgds Frances
