Scouring the Catholic registers for Donoughmore, I believe the following family is that of my GGGM, Hannah Callaghan, her parents and siblings. The clues are from her 1883 marriage record to John Sullivan of Blarney listing her father as Daniel Callaghan and a 1920 shipping manifest listing her birthplace as Donoughmore, Co. Cork.

11 Jan 1852 Daniel Callaghan marries Johanna Denahy in Donaghmore Parish as witnessed by Thomas Sexton & Thomas Denahy.

4 Jul 1852 baptism of Honora to Danl Callaghan & Joney Denehy of Aghadullane as witnessed by John Riordon & Ellen Carrol.

19 Aug 1853 baptism of Patrick to John? Callaghan & Johanna Dennehy of Aghadullane witnessed by Andrew Murphy & Julia Buckley.

20 Jun 1858 baptism of Cornelius to Dan Callahan & Johanna Dennehy of Aghadullane witnessed by Jeremiah Murphy & July Murphy.

18 Sep 1860 baptism of Johanna to Danl Callaghan & Johanna Dennehy of Aghadullane witnessed by John Murphy & Johanna Callaghan. This is my GGGM, Hannah (Callaghan) Sullivan. Died in Cambridge MA 1943.

6 Jan 1863 baptism of Mary to D^l Callaghan & Johanna Murphy of A.dullane witnessed by Cornelius Dennehy & Ellen Lane.

17 Mar 1867 baptism of Ellen to Daniel Callaghan & Johanna Denahy of Richill witnessed by Jeremiah Horigan & Mary Hanlon.

8 Aug 1869 baptism of Daniel to Daniel Callaghan & Johanna Dennehy of Gurrane witnessed by Daniel Healy & Mary Murphy.

25 Aug 1872 baptism of John to Danl Callaghan & Johanna Dennehy of Gurrane witnessed by Patsy Kelleher & Catherine Murphy.

Hannah Callaghan married John Sullivan in 1883 and their first son, John, was born in Blarney Village later that year. In 1886, when my GGM Abina Sullivan was born, their address was Garrycloyne, although Abbie's birth record lists Knocknasuff as their address. Later children of this couple were born in Courtbrack. I believe most of this Sullivan family emigrated to the US.

Any cousins out there who can help us find the final resting sites of our forebears? Suggestions on who to contact for further records? Thanks for your time and consideration.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You mentions quite a few townlands some are in Garrycloyne parish and others in Matehy parish. If you know when your ancestors died, you may want to contact the Blarney and Inniscarra churches to see what they can tell you about cemeteries in the area for your timeframe of interest. The Sullivan surname will complicate the search.

  • There's a text out there and I'm going to Boston next week to the NEHGS who has a copy to look though it for some clues. They only have it in certain libraries and historical centers.

    Here's the text:

Donoughmore and all around : a record of the families commemorated in the old and new cemeteries of Donoughmore Cross and Stuake, Co. Cork: Donoughmore Historical Society, 2010

You can look it up on Wolrdcat.org to see if there's a copy in a libray near you.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you Kerri. I got a copy of Donoughmore and All Around from John O'Connell of the Donoughmore Historical Society and he sent it to me in California. A cousin and I transcribed our potential families from the book into a spreadsheet for quick reference. If there are pages you need pics of, give me holler. Hope theNEHGS meet is fun!

  • Thank you Stignaz! The NEHGS is a great organization and the building is gorgeous. My hometown is Boston and I try to get there a couple of times a year to see family, but also to do research there for stuff not easily found online.
