Hi,

My Grandmother, Bridget Delia Walsh, was born in Doneraile in 1882. Her father, James Walsh, was born in Doneraile in 1848. He was the son of John Walsh (who is listed in Griffith's Valuation in the Parish of Templemolaga, the townland of Graigue in 1851). John Walsh married Honora Cummins in the Church of Kildorrery Parish on 18 Feb. 1840 (witnesses were David Walsh and Denis Lyne).

My Grandmother's mother was Johanna Carey, who married James Walsh (labourer of Graigue) and her father was Slyvester Carey (who is listed as Silvester Carey in Griffith's Valuation of 1851, in the Parish of Templemolaga, the townland of Graigue).

James Walsh and family are listed in the 1901 census living in Doneraile, but they emigrated to America in 1905. I know that many of their children came to the U.S. but my dad says that a few stayed in Ireland. There were ten children: Mary (1873); Honora (1874); Hannah (1875); Patrick (1877); Ellen (1878); Julia (1879); Bridget (1882); John (1883); Katherine (1886); and James (1888).

If any one knows of any more information or knows of any relations it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Thomas McCarthy

  • Hi Thomas

I have an ancestor Silvester Carey. All I know is his name, which was taken from his daughter Bridgets marriage certificate when she married in Cheshire, England. I do not know from where in Ireland he came from, but thought maybe it is not such a common name?

Do you have a Bridget daughter of Silvester, she would have been born about 1830?

  • Hi,

Unfortunately I only have 2 records for Silvester: the 1851 Griffith's Valuation; and from my Great-Grandmother's marriage where he is listed as Slyvester. My Great-Grandmother was born around 1844 (give or take a couple years). So, it is certainly possible that we are writing about the same gentleman--especially since Silvester is such an uncommon name for an Irishman! Do you have the name of Silvester's wife? It was not listed on my Great-Grandmother's marriage record.

  • HI

All I have is that her father was "Silvester Carey, occupation servant" from her marriage cert.

Witnesses - Hugh Prigney and Elizabeth Allen.

I noted there were a few Silvester Carey's in the Lancashire area at the time, but cannot link with her. If you check UK census for St Helen's Lancashire you will see some Silvester Carey. Witnesses - Hugh Prigney and Elizabeth Allen.

Sorry  I can't be of more help, I have so little information myself.

  • My GG Grandfather Was James Carey and he married a Bridget walsh in 1862 in st paul's church in Brooklyn. James was supposedly from County Tipperary. Don't know where Bridget's family was from.

James may have been from Cork. they had a daughter Delia /Bridget born in 1869  in Brooklyn. Where did  your family live in the US?

  • Joe,

My Grandmother Delia Bridget Walsh married my Grandfather Thomas McCarthy in Rochester New York in 1904. They both lived and died in Rochester. On my Carey side of the family, I only know of 2 people: my GGrandmother Johanna Walsh (ni Carey) born app. 1841 (don't know where), married to James Walsh, and mother of Delia Bridget Walsh; and Sylvester Carey, father of Johanna--the only info I have on him is his being registered as Johanna's father on the marriage record of Johanna & James, and his name registered in Griffith's Valuation in Cork. I know nothing of when/where he was born, parents names, siblings, or when/where he died.
