My ancestor Patrick WALSH was born in Doneraile in approximately November 1812.  This was before the Parish Records commenced there so I do not know who his parents were.  In Griffiths Valuation there was a John and a Patrick living in Doneraile.

Patrick's first son was John. His first daughter was Mary. Patrick joined the British Army and wasin the 36th Regiment of Foot travelling all over the world. He married a Bere Island girl in about 1842 when he was in Ireland on furlough.

I have bought two 1812 baptismal records on linefor Mallow but they do not seem to fit.

Has anyone any ideas?  Patrick came to Australia inthe 1850s with four children and had 4 more.

    Hi Jill,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know where patrick was married? If you can find his marriage record it may be helpful as sometimes marriage certs recorded the couple?s fathers? names. If the girl he married was from Bere Island, chances are that that is where they got married. The corresponding Catholic parish for Bere Island is Castletownbere. You can see what records are available in this parish on the Irish Times website:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Castletownbere&churchid=30

As most Catholic records are still held locally, it may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance.

Have you tried obtaining Patrick?s military record? Perhaps there may be some helpful information in these records. For more information check the UK National Archives at:

  • Hi Jill

Your Patrick could be related to my family in that Doneraile is a small place in Ireland

My ancestors left Doneraile in 1825 aboard the ship Brunswick to upper Canada part of the Peter Robinson immigration

    1. The male died 1825 properly just before they where to sail

    2. The female was listed as Widow Walsh ! I later found out her first name began with “M” born 1775

    The Children

    3. John born 1799 that would make him 26 years old in 1825 and his parents in there early fifties

    4. Margaret born 1802

    5. Mary born 1805

    6. Edmond born 1809 16 years old in 1825

Your Patrick would be a long shot it would mean M. Walsh would have had him at the age of 37 and that he stayed back in Ireland at the age of 13 when they left

Edmond I believe returned to Doneraile and may have been evolved in a famous white boys trial in Doneraile

He may have returned because he left siblings behind or to revenge his fathers death

The name Patrick comes up a lot in our family tree
