Researching McCarthy/Daly

Griffiths Valuation for Derrynagree East had a Patrick Daly farming there in 1853. He had a farmhouse, outbuildings and a total of 32 acres of land, part of which was noted as bog. That farm today is where the L4234 leaves the R 586 a mile or so east of Drimoleague.

There were various other Dalys in the townland. Possibly relatives.

I went to Drimoleague recently to look for O'Reilly ancestors and met the 'oldest guy in the village' who was Tim McCarthy! May be a descendent from your ancestors?? Let me know. He's married to Eileen and they have a huge milk farm

I have it that your grandmother would have been born in either Drimoleague Village to Pat McCarthy & Ellen Daly, being baptised on 1 Mar 1883 and one of ten children. The first four were born in Garranes South, with the remainder in the village.

Of the siblings:

1. Mary Agnes married Patrick Hennessy of Derryclogh in Cambridge MA on 16 Feb 1904 - I note six children. His parents were Michael Hennessy and Mary Hennessy, with his ten younger sibling all born in Drominidy North. With Patrick, being the first born, being born in Derryclogh, it might point to his mother being from there, following the (sometimes) tradition of the mother going back to her parents home for her first birth.
2. Ellen married Denis O'Keeffe from Inch, Youghal in Arlington MA on 28 Jan 1896. His parents were William and Johanna McGrath
3. As for Catherine (your grandmother?), her husband's parents were John Duggan and Nancy Regan, he being one of five. Only Jeremiah remained in Foilnamuck, marrying Maggie Duggan of Inishbeg, with the others emigrating to US and marrying West Cork people. His grandparents would be Jeremiah "Thady" Duggan, Julia Sullivan, Richard Regan and Margaret Brien - I only have four of his greatgrandparents so far - might you be able to help fill them out?
4. There was a Johanna/Hannah McCarthy who married Patrick Sullivan in Caheragh church on 12 Aug 1913 - their marriage cert notes her residence as Garranes and father being alive, with his residence as Bantry and father as Patrick. She may be Catherine's sister, but more validation is needed.

As to her parents, Pat McCarthy was born (I think) to Daniel McCarthy and Ellen Driscoll in Garranes South (I think)... Ellen Daly was born in Derrynagree East (bap. 29 Dec 1845) to Patrick and Mary Donovan. I have seven siblings with her grandparents being (another) Patrick Daly of Drimoleague Parish (maybe Derrynagree) and Mary Donovan of Cappadineen.

Thank you for the info.  I do have most of this info as my post was from 2013.  I have large private family tree on Ancestry.  All of my grandmother's sisters went to US.  Hannah married in US, not Ireland.  She married Albert Napoleon MacDonald and they settled in Peterborough, NH.  I know about my Duggan family.  They are as you said Duggan's from Filemuck.  I am also related to O'Regan's and Sullivan's etc from this area.  I, too, think that Daniel McCarthy and Ellen Driscoll, are Pat McCarthy's parents.  I found only one sibling, Daniel. I am  interested in finding out about my Donovan line as I have many dna matches and know little.  Also, one brother of my grandmother was still living in 1951 in Ireland, his name Tim and I wonder what happened to him. Sorry this is all in one paragraph, having trouble with this site both on my laptop and iPad.  Not sure how to respond to individual who posted.  It all must go into the general thread of topic. Do you have any connection to this area?  I can send you my email, but not sure who you are!  Thanks again. Kind regards, Pam

Penny  Thank you!  Not sure, a possibility, but interesting.  I actually think I saw his dairy farm listed online.  I had one great Uncle Tim McCarthy left in Ireland, but don't know if he ever married and had a family.  He was leaving for US on an immigration form but did not embark on the boat.  Many McCarthy's in this area. My great aunt Kay married an O'Reilly from Cork City and he lived until he was 99!  Regards, Pam

i don't know if you have been to this place? It's the tiniest village in the world!! there are literally 10 houses up one side of the high street and 10 houses going down the other side. Some people are dotted around in farms. The family McCarthy have been there for generations and have a huge milk farm, and produce milk, cheese & yoghurt for the area. Their son has a huge house on the land now too. I have pictures of them, as they showed me round my ancestor's house, which was a tiny run down cottage at the bottom of the McCarthy's hill.

Thanks. I relooked at the marriage cert I had for the Hannah McCarthy I was referring to and her residence was Garrane, Caheragh, not Garranes South, no I've placed her correctly now...

Can you recall whether your Timothy McCarthy was a bachelor blacksmith, living just south of the village? If so, my mother recalls him. She is one of the many Kingstons of Meenies, with Mahony, Regan, Kelly, McCarthy, Spillane ancestors from neighbouring townlands.

​Jerry  Again, having trouble with the format on this site.  It is probably just me.  In re:  Tim McCarthy sibling to my grandmother, I know he was alive in 1951, because his sister Hanna's obit said survived by a brother in Ireland.  He stayed home.  All his sisters including additional Margaret and Bridget (Jane) left for the US. A brother Daniel was listed as idiot on 1901 Irish census so he must have been disabled and died before the next census.  Another brother Andrew may have died as a baby/child.  There is still one more child unaccounted for...  Tim was listed in the 1911? census as a post-man, so I don't know if he was a blacksmith too.  He was living with his father. Seems unlikely but maybe.   Seems lonesome to have all your siblings gone, perhaps he had aunts, uncles or some cousins near him.  I will never know why he didn't get on the boat for US.  Maybe health or just changed mind.  Regards, Pam
