My grandmother [Ellen "Nellie" HARNEDY] had a twin sister - Maria HARNEDY - who stayed behind in Ireland, whereas the rest of her siblings came to America and settled in the Boston area. I would like to learn what happened to Maria. Did she marry? Have children?
Here is what I know of the family:
Father: Daniel HARNEDY, b. ~ 1860, in Killeenleigh, Angram, Dromdaleague / Caheragh
Mother: Mary KEANE, b. 1854, location: ??
Children:
Ellen + Maria, b. 25 NOV 1885, in Killeenleigh, Angram, Dromdaleague
Margaret, b. 1887, same place
Catherine, b. 1888, same place
William, b. 1890, same place
Patrick, b. 16 AUG 1891, same place
Hanora, b. 1893-4, same place
* I don't know what happened to the parents either. I assume they stayed in County Cork but their farm is no longer in HARNEDY hands.
Please e-mail me directly at dawn@lakegroup.com or call: 602.405.2044, if you have any information. I'll be in Ireland in late October 2013, so will be touring the Caheragh area.
Thank you!

Maria:
Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the Harnedy family who were living in Angram townland, Dromdaleague civil parish. I also found a marriage index record for a Maria Harnedy who married in 1924. This marriage was in the Skibbereen registration district which includes Angram. There are three male names on the index record. One of the three married this Maria. If she is your relative, she would be around 39 in 1924. To get a copy of this record, contact the GRO www.groireland.ie fill out their forma nd provide the info from the index record: quarter/year of marriage, registration district and volume and page number ( 5 and 386). Costs around 4 euros. I will look for the death records for her parents. Let me know if you have any questions.

Dawn:
I looked for death index records for Daniel and Mary in the Skibbereen registration district and did not find any records that tied to the ages in the 1901 and 1911 censuses i.e. late 1850s early 1860s. If they moved to another part of Cork then they may have been in a different registration district. I use www.familysearch.org to search.

Roger, you are phenominal ! I really don't know how to search these Irish records but am eager to learn. Anything I find I get off familysearch.org and Rootsweb but don't know how to validate the data.
I just got a reply to a query I sent my cousin Brian HARNEDY regarding Maria. He writes:
"Our family started in Tureen, between Drimoleague and Skibbereen. Our current relatives live in Mitchelstown and outside of Cork City. I only knew of two members from the older generation that did not come to America. She, I believe it was Mary [Maria], is buried with her brother William, in Mitchelstown."
Separate question:
If I want to seek current relatives before I get to Ireland, is there a way to search phone directories? I made an attempt but couldn't find anything that was easy to use. I figured I'd look at phone books when I get there but would love to know of some likely areas before I get there.
THANK YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN!

Dawn:
The online Irish phonebook is at http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/
I have had very little success using this site. Very few Irish folks have their number listed.

If you want to find people in Ireland who might be connected to your family lines, how else would you go about it? Or would the Irish people be annoyed if you just called them?
Thanks for your advice,
Dawn

Dawn:
I don't see a problem calling particularly if you are in Ireland. As you probably know, there is an eight hour time difference with Arizona.
