Hello,  I am looking for more information on my G Grandmother's parents.  My G Grandmother was Nora Dennehy b. 1861 to Denis Dennehy and Julia Murphy.

Her siblings that I know of are

Timothy b. 1858

Julia b.1862

Mary b. 1863

John b. 1865

Patrick b. 1867

Denis b. 1869

Catherine b. 1872

Jerimiah b. 1874

Nora's baptism record says Millstreet, Diocese of Kerry Parish Drishane.

All of them immigrated to the US in the late 1880's to Massachusetts.

I am not able to find their parents marriage. One does show up for Denis Dennehy and Julia Murphy but it's for 1866 so I doubt that is them.

Are there any records available before 1840?  I would presume the parents would of been born somewhere between 1835-1840.

Thank you in advance,

KC

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I went on www.irishgenealogy.ie and saw baptismal records for a number of the children (five) in Millstreet parish. Marriage records for the parish start in 1855 and baptismal records in December 1853. It is possible the couple married in Millstreet before 1855 which would mean no record available.

One other possibility is this record from the neighboring parish of Rathmore. Maybe Julia was Johanna.

  • Hi KC,

I would study the sponsors at the baptisms to see if you pick up any clues as to other family members.

I had a look at the civil birth records (from 1864) on irishgenealogy.ie and I see that Denis Denahy was a labourer so he was moving around. In 1865, the family was at Cockhill, Coolnagillalgh (Upper) and in 1867, they were still there. In 1869, they were at Ballyvouskill and  in 1872 they were in Kilmeedy. In 1874, they were in Cloughoula Mor

All of the above are in close proximity to each other in the Millstreet Parish. It is likely that your Denahys are from that area. Murphys are very numerous in the area too.

There were Denahys in Cloughoula Mor in Coomlogane, Millstreet (also spelt Cloghboola More) in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

You might also consider DNA testing. I have a NW Co. Cork Family Finder Project at Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com). The link to the project is: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/nw-cork-ireland-ff

You would need to do an autosomal DNA test to join the project. The Family Finder test at Family Tee DNA ia $79. Alternatively, you can upload raw data to Family Tree DNA, from 23&Me and Ancestry.

We have a lot of people who have ancestry from the Millstreet area in the project, including myself.

    Best regards,

  • Thank you both.  I did do my DNA on ancestry and two weeks ago uploaded it to FTDNA but the family finder matches are still listed as pending.  I've contacted customer service and they said they are working on it.  My plan was to join some various groups when theys get straighted away I will.

  • Hi KC,

I look forward to seeing you in the NW Co. Cork FF Project. It is a pity about the delay at FTDNA. You could also upload your raw data to Gedmatch, com This is free and anyone who tested with Ancestry, 23&Me and FTDNA can upload their raw data to it. There are useful tools there to help with the analysis. You will find a lot of NW Cork matches there.
