My Great Grandfather was James Joseph Finan (15Nov1863 - 12Jul1923)  my records show he was born in a place called  Castleplunket County Roscommon.

My records show that his parents were James Finan (1835 - ???) and Catherine Muldoon (1841 - ???)

He married Margaret Sweeney (22Feb1861 - 20Feb1917).  I know she was born in Ireland but I am not sure where.

The lived in Cincinnati, Ohio USA.

Margaret Sweeny had a brother, Thomas Sweeney (1862 - 1944).  Thomas was born in Ireland.  His passport list High Lake as the town he was from in County Roscommon.

Castleplunket townland is in Kilkeevin civil parish and is about two miles east of the town of Castlerea. The older Finans were not in Castleplunket in 1901. Possibly one or both were deceased. I did find a possible death index record for a James Finan who was a little older than your 1835 year of birth. When the National Archives site is back up, I can do a little more searching.

By the way, High Lake is also known as Ardlagheen More townland which is in Cloonygormican civil parish, two parishes to the the east/southeast of Kilkeevin.

  • Roger,

You are the best !  I think that could be my Great Grandfather.

Thanks for the insight about Roscommon and the offer for future research.

I went to www.familysearch.org and searched for all Finan children born to James Finan and Catherine Muldoon. A number of baptismal records came up although not your great-grandfather probably since he was born in 1863.

Patrick 1/25/1867 Ellen 3/31/1871 Catherine 11/28/1873 and another Patrick 10/1/1875 and finally twins Bridget and Honoria 8/31/1877. Possibly the first Patrick died and the second was named after him which was a practice in Ireland.

I looked for Catherine Finan death index records and found three. I will only give you the years 1837-1877 1835-1908 1842-1925 I would speculate that Catherine possibly died when she had the twins in 1877 and the first record may be her. Do you or other family members have any recollections on when Catherine died?

Finally, I looked at the 1901 census for the civil parish of Baslick (which includes Castleplunket). I found three families in the same townland Lissalway. Possibly James and Catherine lived there also. Two of the head of households were older and possibly were brothers to James. Interestingly, the third family was headed by a 33 year old Patrick which matches the 1867 date of birth above and maybe he did not die.

Let me know what you think. You can search www.familysearch.org and www.census.nationalarchives.ie for yourself.

  • Roger,

    This is great stuff !!

Some of the information I did have but you did fill in a couple of holes for me.  You also helped confirm some info I already had found.

Ellen Finan - she was my Grandmother's aunt and lived with my grandparents in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She died in Nov 1959.  I was born in 1956 so I do not remember her but my older sisters do.  I remember at my grandparent's house we always call the room she used as ?unt Ella's room".  She never married and worked as a live in servant for many years.  Ellen Finan March 31, 1871 - Nov 16, 1959

Catherine Finan - my records showed she married John Flaherty

The twins - I had Bridget but did not know about Honoria so that is new.  My records list Bridget's death as June 1937 in Ireland.  Not sure where I got that info so I am not sure if it is correct.

Back to my Great Grandparents James Finan and Catherine Muldoon ...

Catherine Mulddon - she had a sister Ellen Muldoon (1844 - Jan 19, 1918)  I am certain about the sister and reasonablity certain about the dates.

Ellen Muldoon married Patrick Gallagher (Feb 1835 - Mar 26, 1913)  Ellen and Patrick were born in Ireland and they were married in 1871.  I am not sure where.

According to my records Catherine and Ellen's father was John Muldoon.

My records show that James Finan and Catherine Muldoon had another child named Delia Finan (Aug 6, 1879 - Jun 29, 1916).  Delia married Theodore Olsen (1851 - June 18, 1902).  My records show that Theodore Olsen was born in Norway.  My records show that Delia was born in Roscommon.

I have attached a work document of Ellen Finan.

Thank you for your help.  I need to spend some more time with the info.

    Pat
