I am trying to trace a Timothy McCarthy in the Drimoleague area.  He was in the 1901 Ireland census with his son Con in Kilmore (Bredagh DED of Cork).  At the time he was 67 and Con was 28.  Con was listed as a quarryman.

Timothy and Con moved to Derrygrea. Con married Ellie Shinnick of Bishopsland in 1908. Timothy died 4-Feb-1910. Con is listed as Cornelius, age 38, quarryman, in Derrynagree West (Garranes DED of Cork) in the 1911 census.  I have Con's and Ellie Shinnick's marriage record to confirm his father was named Timothy McCarthy.

I have systematically worked through civil registration from 1864 to 1880, looking at every record of a Cornelius McCarthy born to a Timothy McCarthy in the Skibbereen and Dunmanway area.  There were surprisingly few.  Unless I missed something, I have only found two, and they are both accounted for in the online church records and in the Ireland censuses (one in Kilmeen parish (Ballingurteen DED of Cork), one in Shandrum of Kilmacabea parish, Drinagh DED of Cork).

I am unable to determine the origin of this Timothy McCarthy who lived in Kilmore with his son Cornelius!  I was hoping to be able to link him to my 3g-grandfather, Charles McCarthy of Lissane (1797-1882), but have far too little to go on.  I cannot find any records for this family which makes me think they lived elsewhere for a while.  If anybody has any information about the origins or history of this Kilmore / Derrynagree family, I would be very grateful.

  • Thanks Andy,

I did try plugging in Tim McCarthy and Ellen Harte into the church record search engine and can't find a son Cornelius, unfortunately.

I may slog through Clonakilty, Bantry and a few other areas (where could Cornelius have gone to work in a quarry?) but I think it's going to take some local knowledge of this family to shed some light on their origins.

    Thanks again,
    Susan

  • I have a tiny bit more information on this family.  TImothy McCarthy and Ellen Shinnick had three children:

    Kate b. 1910
    Margaret Mary b. 1912
    Timothy b. 1913

None of the baptism sponsors were named McCarthy.

If anyone knows a descendant of this family I would be grateful to be put in touch.

  • Hi Helen,

I do not know the origins of your ancestor Timothy but have since found "my" Timothy - the brother of my 2g-grandfather Cornelius McCarthy, living in Skibbereen. My Timothy died in 1901.

    Thanks,

    Susan

  • Hi Sussn

So you found out that you are not related to my great grandfather and grandfather Timothy & Con from Derrigrea/ Kilmore which you queried in your original post.

Happy to hear you eventually traced your ancestors.
