Hello,
does anyone know anything of the Callaghans who farmed at Corran - at least until the 1920s? My g grandmother was Catherine - Kate - daughter of Jerry Callaghan, but I don't have her mothers name. Kate was born about 1840, but perhaps not in this parish as she doesn't appear in the records for Ballinhassig. She had a sister Honora, who married Ed Barrett and had the pub at Killeady ( I think that the family may still ) they were friends and supporters of Tom Barry. Kate also had a brother Daniel, who took over the farm at Corran until his son, Jeremiah took it over in the 1930s sometime. I would very much like to discover more about the family if at all possible. Corran is in the northern section of Dunderrow, about 6 miles southwest of Cork city, just south of Ballincollig and west of Waterfall.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I can help out a little bit. Here is the 1911 census record for the family.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Dunderrow/Corran/…
I also located a civil marriage index record for the first quarter of 1884 which shows that a Daniel O'Callaghan married and the four spouses on the page include a Julia Murphy so I'm pretty sure that is the name you want. That date ties to the 27 years married on the 1911 census.

Hello Roger, thank you for your reply and the searches! I had the info that Daniel had married a Julia Desmond in Bandon in 1883, but I think that this may well be incorrect and that Julia Murphy is a more likely candidate.
I have had many problems trying to find the Callaghans in the parish records for Ballinhassig, do you know if there are any gaps or holes in these records - this would be for the 1830 - 1840 period? This is my father's family, who mostly came to London by the early 1910 - 1920s. My grandfather's wife, who came from Wexford Town, thought that the Callaghans were " very mountainy "!!!
Best wishes, Bridie.

Here is a link to the actual parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0010 Records start in 1821 for baptisms and there is no indication that there are gaps in the records.

Hello again Roger, thank you for getting back to me, I had been told in the past by Genealogists in Cork that there were "missing" gaps in the parish entries for Ballinhassig and some other neighbouring parishes, and as I cannot find any baptismal entries for a Catherine Callaghan, whose father was named on her marriage cert in Ballyheader in 1867 as Jerry Callaghan, but whose mother's name is unknown. In 1867 she gives her age as 27, but as her husband Jeremiah McCarthy, born in 1828 gives his age as 30, perhaps the date should be treated with some caution! This leaves me thinking that either she was born away from Corran in a different parish altogether, or that her baptism was left out of the parish register. The problem is that I can find entries in other parishes for a Catherine born to a Jeremiah Callaghan for around 1840, but NOT for her brother and sisters - Mary, Honora, Daniel to the same parents. Would it be feasible, as there are no death records for this period, that her mother died and Jerry Callaghan had then to marry another? Only it's very hard to match up putative parents! Bridie.

If Mary Honora and Daniel were all younger than or older than Catherine then your hypothesis is feasible but you just don't know.
You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you might match someone that can help break down this brick wall.
