Hi All,

I am descended from Ellen Sullivan Brennan, born in Rathcanning in about 1850. She was the daughter of Maurice and Margaret Sullivan, and the niece of William Murphy and his wife Mary, who lived in Younggrove, on the estate of the Turpins. I believe Mary must have been a Sullivan originally. Nothing is known of Maurice and Mary.

Ellen was also the niece of Mary Murphy Connelly, who was supposed to have been widowed in Ireland at 18, and went to Framingham , Massachusetts, working as a maid; another aunt Catherine Murphy Synnott, ended up in New Norfolk, Tasmania.

William Murphy died in 1902, his wife Mary sometime earlier. All their children ended up in Framingham, Boston or Newport, RI.

Several neighboring families in Framingham were also native to Dungourney, I believe  -- the Motherways, the Pumphrets and the Courtneys and Henebrys. I'd be interested in speaking with anyone with any knowledge of these families, or are familiar with Younggrove.

Thanks, Chris Mullen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland for all Sullivan baptismal records in Co. Cork with parents Maurce and Margaret. Three records came up in the 1840s and none was an Ellen or Helen. Just so you know, Roots Ireland only has the parishes including Imogeela which are in the Diocese of Cloyne. The remaining parishes are in the Diocese of Cork and Ross and the records for those parishes are on this free site www.irishgenealogy.ie     Dungourney civil parish corresponds to Imogeela RC parish in east Cork and as I indicated they should be on Roots. Here is a link to the parish register for Imogeela. Records start in 1835 for baptisms.

I did locate baptismal records for five children of William Murphy and Mary (she was a Sullivan). Below is the record for the oldest child Mary. There was also Denis in 1858 Ellen 1859 andother Ellen in 1860 (first Ellen died young?) Michael 1863

  • Hi Chris, just some information on the Pomphrets or  Pompery and Motherways you mentioned. They lived across the road In Moanashask a sub denomination of the Townland of Knockanenakirka civil parish of Dangan from the Sullivans that lived in Rathcanning.

Timothy Pomphret married Hanora Buckley in1857 in Ballymacoda. They had 4 children Cath, John, Johanna and May. Timothy died  and his wife Hanora married Thomas Motherway and had 5 more children Mary, Patrick and Timothy wereTwins, Mgt, and Joanne born 1881. So the Pomphrets and Motherways had the same mother.

In Griffith valuation 1850 Ellen Sullivan held a house and a small holding of a few acres. A Denis Sullivan held a house in Rathcanning.

Youngrove would be on the opposite side of Dungourney Parish about 4 miles from Rathcanning.

  • Hi Will,

Thanks for the information. I've seen some of this finormation, but your context is very hekpful. I've been looking at OS Survey maps, and somehow the spatial setting gives records a new dimension.

Interestingly, there were neighboring Pumphret and Buckley families in my father's neighborhood in Framingham. And one of my uncles was named after a Roger Motherway, who was a nieghbor of my grandmother's generation. I was very surprised to see that in the Tithe Applotments for Dungourney, there's a Roger Motherway householder right there in the 1820s. I assume he was a grandfather or great uncle to the namesake who lived in Framingham.

    Thanks, again, Chris M
