I am looking for anyone who connects with George Henry Rawlins or his wife Harriet Orr Rawlins (of Innishannon).

George Henry Rawlins is found in 1837 living in Peafield House...owned by J Minton, esq.  George was the son of Dr. Thomas Rawlins and wife Jane.  His sister, Harriet Maria Rawlins Anderson Inverarity returned to Cork from Scotland after the death of her second husband and died in 1870.  George H. Rawlins died in 1874.  I would be happy to share what I have of family information.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I will alert our parish liaison in Durrus about your message. I know you are looking for connections so if he has any info, I will ask him to comment.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Thank you, Roger.   I would love to find relatives connected to this family.  I spent years researching to identify our line and finally, a cousin of mine found some pictures that we thought were lost.  They identified Harriet Maria Rawlins Anderson Inverarity and her daughter Jennie.  They also contained photos of George and Harriet (Orr) Rawlins.  My 2xs great grandfather, Samul Rawlins,  left Ireland in March of 1867 for NYC.  He died in 1884 in Philadelphia.   He appears to have worked for a time for a private shipping company.

Both my sister and I have done autosomal testing.  I have tested through both Ancestry and FTDNA.  I have also tested an older second cousin who descends from this family.  The cousin who sent the photos has also tested through Ancestry.  One of Samuel's brothers (Francis)  did move out of Cork.  Another brother, William Rawlins, had several children with his second wife Elizabeth Cole Rawlins.  I have pieced together a lot of family information thanks to a terrific researcher that worked with me about 10 years ago.  Still, it would be wonderful to learn more as there are so many questions.

  • Hi BevWalk,

From your first message I think you should be looking on the Inishannon Parish page. Durrus is about 50 miles south west from Inishannon so there would be no connection. I see Peafield house is on the banks of the Bandon river just downstream from Inishannon so I am sorry that I ca't be of any help to you.

  • Thank you so much, Danny.  Actually, George H. Rawlins' wife, Harriet Orr Rawlins' family was from Inishannon.  I will definitely check this out.  The Rawlins family appears to have moved around a bit in Co. Cork.  Dr.. Thomas Rawlins, father of George Henry Rawlins Sr. was described as having been from Woodview.  George H.Rawlins' son of the same name married wife Elizabeth Godson at Rossmore, Durrus in 1865 and George H. Rawlins Sr. died at Cloghfadda House in 1877.

Apparently, in the 1820s, Dr. Thomas Rawlins removed the family for a time to England because of an epidemic.  His daughter, Harriet Maria Rawlins married Arthur Anderson, from Scotland, in London in 1831,  Thanks to a terrific researcher, I was able to collect much of this data.  Still. it would be wonderful to learn more and to possibly find a relative!!!

  • Hello BevWalk,

I just came across this conversation. Danny Tobin who messaged you a few years back is a cousin connected to me from the Sheepshead area, where my Sullivan's absconded from. I live in Sarasota FL. I have 18 BigY 700 matches on FTDNA including a Rawlings from Arkansas. We have no idea how we connect because our branch ends pre surnames. A while back I sent him a copy of the article linked below, inconclusive if here was a link to his Rawlings.

    Kind Regards,
