I am looking for my ancestors and possibly relatives that might be still living in Ireland. My GGGrandfather, Danile Lucy, married Julia Harrington in Durrus, County Cork, Ireland on February 21, 1846. This was Daniel's second marriage, and we are unsure who his first wife was, but they had a son John Lucy who was born in 1842. Daniel was born around 1814 and Julia was born around 1827. Julia's father was John Harrington (B-1790ish) and she had a sister Ellen (b-1833ish). Daniel had a brother named Timothy who married Julia Bourke/Burke around 1840 and they had a daughter Catherine in 1841. Julia's mother was Mary Bourke/Burke and born around 1790ish. Daniel and Timothy families, including John and Ellen Harrington, emigrated from Ireland in late 1848 or early 1849 to upstate NY in Madison and Oneida counties. There were other Loucy/Lucys that immigrated to upstate NY and were either siblings or cousins, Patrick, Catherine, Ellen, Betsy and Ellen.

We visited Durrus back in 2009 and actually saw the original entry of Daniel and Julia's marriage in the church records. I can't remember the priest's name, but he was supper friendly and helpful! In our search, we have used Family Search, Irishgenealogy.ie and Catholic Parishes from the National Library of Ireland, as well as many sources here in the U.S.

Looking to continue our search for past ancestors as well as any living relatives that might still be living in Ireland!

Thanks

Brian Loucy

irishgenealogy.ie has January 14 1842 baptismal record for a John Lucy with father Daniel Lucy and mother Mary McCarthy. The RC parish is Schull East which is two parishes over from Durrus. They also had a Michael Lucy baptized October 5 1844 in Schull East. One sponsor for John Lucy was an Ellen Lucy and a sponsor for Michael Lucy was Julia Lucy. I pass these records to you as leads.

I don't see any mention in your message that you have taken a DNA test. You may want to consider a general DNA test. You may have 3rd or 4th cousins anywhere in the world who may have more info on your Lucy family.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the quick response and leads! Outstanding! So now my question is since Michael didn't come to America with Daniel, my initial thought is he may have died and maybe with Mary McCarthy...only a thought. This leads to the question, are there any burial records still available that I could search?

Yes, I have had a DNA test and I have started looking at the matches and even found a couple 4th to 6th cousins that through various marriages were unknown to us!!!

    Thanks again!

Most RC parishes including Durrus do not have any death records. Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Possibly Mary and Michael died during a difficult child birth but we have no way of knowing for sure.

  • Roger,

    Thanks again!

Also, you mentioned RC Schull East was 2 parishes over from Durrus. Is that a long distance for Daniel move back then? As he remarried in Durrus.
