O’Brien-Power

John and Catherine POWER O’BRIEN were married in GLANWORTH, Co. Cork
on February 23, 1841. Their children John (September 16, 1842), Mary (1844), Margaret
(1846), Patrick (1848) and Hanorah ( 1849) were born in Duntahane, FERMOY. The family emigrated to the United States, probably through Canada, in 1851. They settled in
Colonie, now Menands, Albany County, NY.

The 1855 New York census does not mention Patrick or Hanorah. It is not known
when or where they died. Children born in New York were Hannah, Catherine, Edward,
William and Alice. Son John, my great grandfather married Maria BRENNAN of
Watervliet, daughter of James and Margaret Lahey Brennan, Kilkenny and possibly Tipperary natives.

Names listed as witnesses for John and Catherine’s marriage and children’s baptisms in Ireland are Patrick POWER, John BRIEN, Patrick BRIEN, Ned BRIEN, Michael BRIEN, Daniel HICKEY, Margaret HICKEY, Ellen SWEENEY and Margaret SHEEHAN.

Any additional information or suggestions concerning these families would be most
appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We apologize that you did not receive a response during the Holidays. We are doing a cleanup operation currently. I checked the parish register for Glanworth  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0054  and unfortunately, the records start in 1836 so you won't be able to find a baptismal record for John or Catherine. Fermoy records start in 1828.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing to see if you match anyone with O'Brien/Power connections.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.

  • siskabob,

I have been doing some work on headstone inscriptions at Kilcrumper Old Cermetery in Fermoy. I came across the following that may be relevant? Labacally is very close to Glanworth. The names or the address of Redmond Street may mean something. There is an older headstone for Powers beside this one.

    Best wishes, Kieran
