Research)ing the family of  James Hegarty of Rathduff.  James  was married to Hannah Curtin (the Curtin family still owns the Halfway House In Rsthduff).  They had one son, Patrick (my grandfather) who emigrated to Chicago with his Rathduff neighbor, David Walsh.

James was widowed and remarried but we do not know to whom.

Any information would be welcomed!

Best,

Judy

  • Judy: The 1901 census for Rathduff shows a Bridget Hegarty age 36 a widow with a 19 year old son named Patrick. There is also a David Walsh age 27 in another household in Rathduff.       http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000507946/                                                                      I also found a death index record for a James Hegarty for 1897 in the Cork Registration district.

    Birth Year (Estimated): 1848
    Mother's Maiden Name:

You would neeed to write to the GRO to get the actual record. www.groireland.ie                                                                                                                                                                 You don't mention when Patrick went to Chiago so I don't know if these records fit your situation. Sorry for the lack of spacing. Roger McDonnell

  • Hello, Roger --

Thank you SO very much for your quick response and your efforts!  I was aware of the census listing and I have reason to believe that this is my grandfather.  The entry for James Hegarty is a great find and I am so appreciative.  My grandfather and Dave Walsh emigrated in 1904 and his father was deceased at that point.  James Hegarty married the first time in 1878 so this does work with the dates in the death record.

I can't thank you enough for your trouble.  This new initiative is really quite remarkable but it does rely very heavily on the kindness of people and I am very appreciative of yours!!

    Best,
