I am a descendant of Jeramiah Griffin and Catherine Courtney who were married in Imogeela RC parish in 1840.  Their son, William, was born in 1841 and was baptized in the local Church.  They also had children Honorah, Edmond and Jeremiah.  William emigrated to the United States about 1858.  I would like to hear from any Griffins in the area of Imogeely.

Yes, I do have some more information.  Working backwards.   My gr gr grandfather, William Griffin born 1841 in Co Cork, Ireland emigrated to the US in 1858.  From his marriage record in New York City, I found that his parents were Jeremiah Griffin and Catherine Courtenay. I found Jeremiah Griffin and Catherine Courtenay's marriage in 1840 in Imogeela RC Parish in the Roots Ireland indexes.  I also found baptism records for 4 children born between 1841 and 1849.  From the records on the National Library of Ireland website I was able to view the actual records.  From the NLI records I found that the family was living in Ballymacoola when the first three children, William, Honora and Edmond were baptized.  In 1849 the family was living in the Midleton workhouse when son Jeremiah was baptized.

So now I wonder if there are any records from the workhouse.  Thank you in advance for any guidance you can offer.

  • I have found some new information about the Jeremiah Griffin and Catherine Courtenay family.  In 1852 they had another child, Thomas.  At that time they were living at Chapel Road, Midleton.  In Griffith's Evaluation for 1853, Jeremiah is listed at Chapel Road in Middleton.  This was an exciting discovery.   I hope to discover more information about this family.  Pamela Smith

    Hello Anne,

I have only found William in the United States.  I have not been able to find the family in any US records.  I have not been able to find out what happened to the family between 1853 and 1858 when William emigrated.  In looking at Irish records available to me after 1853 there was more than one Jeremiah Griffin and I am unable to distinguish which one could be William's father.

I thank you for your assistance.  Pamela Smith
