I am a descendant of Timothy McCarthy and Bridget Sullivan. They married in the parish of Inchigeelagh, also known as Iveleary, in 1833.They were Roman Catholic and  'Rossolohy' is their address on the wedding record.

They had 3 children and emigrated to Australia in 1841 - they sailed from Bristol and arrived in Melbourne. The ship's records says that their occupations were 'farm servants'.They have 2 more children.including Thomas, who eventually marries Maria McGlinn. They have a daughter Mary McCarthy who marries my grand-father James Beeching in Melbourne in 1905

.I can't find much more about Timothy and Bridget ; there is a mention of him in an 1847 publication as an 'agriculturalist'.

I am travelling to Ireland in late August and am going to the village of Inchigeelagh.

Is there any one who knows about or is related to Timotyh or Bridget -anywhere in the world?!

Cheers

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish registers are now online and here is the link to Iveleary http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0062    records go back to 1816. Your families surnames are so common, it will be difficult to identify current relatives.

The townland spelling is Rossalougha and it is a fairly large townland of over 900 acres. Rossalougha is about a 20 minute drive (according to Google Maps) to the west of Inichigeelagh. Rossalougha is very close to the Co. Kerry border.

I looked at Google Maps and the three townlands you mentioned are also in Inchigeelagh civil parish, however, they are not close to Rossalougha. Coolmountain and Coolcaum are very close to each other to the southeast of Rossalougha. Clogher is also to the southeast of Rossalougha. Below is a link to an Irish Times site which shows the townlands of Inchigeelagh (it is a very large parish from a size standpoint). I also gave you a link to the RC church in Inchigeelagh which is St. Finbarrs and Holy Angels. The church go back to 1842.

I would go into the town of Inchigeelagh. Hopefully there is a place where you can get directions. As I mentioned previously, Rossalougha is about 20 minutes west of Inchigeelagh. The area I'm sure is very rural, not many houses, etc. Looks like you drive out the R584 regional road. You will have to ask directions locally to find the townland.

  • How did you go Jim? Are you any wiser?? I hope you found what you were looking for?

My family were from Inchigeelagh, is it a beautiful spot? I hope to go there one day.  Trying to understand the records is a completely different kettle of fish!

  • Hi Jim

how did you go with your research? I'm interested in McCarthy in Inchigeelagh, specifically Ellen MacCarthy formerly Mahony
Born 1809 in County Cork, Wife of James McCarthy — married 1831 in Inchigeelagh. Ellen and children ended up near Goulburn NSW. Do you know the mames of Timothy's siblings?

  • Hi Jim, i would recommend speaking to Joe Creedon who is proprietor of Creedons hotel. He is a local historian and will no doubt lead you in the right direction. You can mention my name as a reference if you wish.

Inchigeela is a very small village so you certainly will find it easy to get around. Alot of areas you mentioned such as coolmountian is just a mountain with some inhabitants so do not expect to find a village there.

The village church is still in use (or at least was until the flu broke out) so you will be able to go there also. The parish priest resides in a house behind the church should you wish to speak with him.

You may of have noticed I spell Inchigeela differently. This is common amongst locals and is the same place as Inchigeelagh.

Hope you have a pleasant trip and locate some ancestors.

    Kind regards,
