I am looking into my Irish ancestors, the information I have is as follows:- Timothy Leary born appx 1811, married Ellen Kearney 12 Feb 1839 In Roman Catholic Church Inchigeelagh. Had son Jeremiah Leary 1841, baptized 13 June 1841, Jeremiah later left for England and works as a lightermen on the River Thames as did his subsequent children. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Your Learys moved around a little. www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has records for RC parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Inchigeelagh. When the couple was married in 1839, Timothy was living in Kealvaugh townland. Their first child was Mary baptized on April 3rd, 1840 and the family was still in Kealvaugh. When Jeremiah was baptized in 1841 they had moved to a nearby townland called Derryvacorneen. There was a Cornelius baptized in September 1843 and an Ellen on February 15, 1846 while the family was in Derryvacorneen. However, the last child I could locate was Eliza who was baptized May 20th, 1849 and at that time the family was in Coomdorragha townland in the same parish.

The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Inchigeelagh civil parish shows eleven Timothy Leary records. None in Coomdorragha but there was one in Kealvaugh More. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/inchigeelagh.htm

  • Have you had your DNA tested at AncestryDNA.com? I administer a DNA kit for both myself and a woman who lives in Inchigeelagh. We both have O'Leary as a surname in our ancestry. Perhaps we can find a connection through DNA.

  • Hi Nancy, Yes I have had my DNA done by Ancestry and that bought up th O'Leary connection, it says I'm 48% Irish. My paternal grandmother was Elizabeth O'Leary ( or Leary) her father was James, son of Jeremiah Leary and he was the son of Timothy Leary who's wife was Ellen Kearney ( if my research is accurate) I would like to know more, who was Timothy's father etc etc, I'm sure there must be many decendants over there in the Emerald Isle. Please let me know what info you have. Many thanks  Jean Clark

Hello Roger McDonnell, thank you so much for your quick detailed response. My questions are as follows, you state that Timothy was living in Kealvaugh town land, is that part of Inchigeelagh or somewhere different ? Then you say Jeremiah was born in Derrvacoreen ! Is that somewhere different again from Inchigeelagh. As I am not knowledgable about the parish's and places in County Cork they could be very near one another or miles apart. The only concrete knowledge I have managed to trace via Ancestry ( and I could be wrong) is the information that goes back to get.gt.gt.grandfather Timothy born 1811, I know there are many many Learys in that area, but if it helps pin down the right one, his wife was Ellen Kearney, her parents were Timothy Kearney and he was married to Ellen Regan. I have no idea why they left Ireland but they end up in an area of south east London called Rotherhite and also Southwark in 1851

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me, this is something I have been trying to solve for many years

    Kind regards.  Jean Clark

All three townlands (Kealvaugh, Coomdorragha and Derryvacorneen) are all in the civil parish of Inchigeelagh. I used Google Maps and all three are within three miles of each other. There is a also a small village called Inchigeelagh.

Records for Inchigeelagh RC parish start in 1816 so if your Timothy was born in 1811 a record is likely not available.

I too am looking for my family from Inchigeela.  My great grandparents, John Leary and Hanna Sullivan, were married at St. Finbar's South Chapel in Cork City on September 7, 1862.  I've just found out the my great great grandfather, John Leary Sr, married by great great grandmother, Hannah Casey at St. FInbar's in Inchigeela in 1833.

It looks like you have made lots of progress......this is my wish too.

  • I am also looking for Leary/O'Leary ancestors from Inchigeelagh Parish, and specifically Kealvaugh.  I have had my DNA tested through Ancestry, and my profile name on Ancestry is GrandmaBarbie1957, and I have a public tree connected to it.  My great grandfather was Denis Peter O'Leary (Leary), born 1 April, 1882 in Kealvaugh, Cork, Ireland.  His parents were Jeremiah Leary, bap. 20 February 1842 in Iveleary, Cork, Ireland, and Mary Buckley, born in March 1852 in Haremount, Cork, Ireland, to Michael Buckley and Mary Cotter.  My 3rd great grandparents were Timothy Leary, born about 1811 in Kealvaugh, Cork, Ireland, and Hanorah (Norry) Kearney, born 1820 in Inchigeelagh, Cork, Ireland to Daniel Kearney (sometimes Carney), and Hannah Driscoll. Great grandfather, Denis P. O'Leary and his parents, siblings, and widowed grandmother Hanorah O'Leary all immigrated to California in 1883.  Jeremiah's brothers immigrated to California earlier, starting in 1868.  My third great grandfather, Timothy Leary, died sometime between 1870-1883, in the Inchigeelah or Kealvaugh area.  I would like to find out when he died and where he's buried, and anything further back on the Leary/O'Leary family.  Kealvaugh was a very small community, so I sure all of the Leary's are related.  There was one Leary/O'Leary left in Ireland, John Leary, who was the brother of Jeremiah.  He married, had a family, and was a farmer in Kealvaugh.
