Ellen CAREY married Thomas SULLIVAN on 20 November 1830 at Carrigdownane, Kildorrery Parish.  They had 4 children and Thomas moved to England when Ellen died c1862.  Any information on either the CAREY or SULLIVAN family would be very much appreciated.

  • Many thanks for all of that.  Some sites I've searched but will keep trying. I've used Ancestry (census & marriage), family records & Genes Reunited (where I made contact with a Carey family member).

ELLEN CAREY  had a brother, MICHAEL, born c1801, who married Maria Cullin at Stepney St Dunstan, London in 1823. He was a 'sugar baker' and 'laborer' and died prior to the 1841 UK census They had 6 children:Michael (1827), Mary Ann(1832), Ellen(1833), Edward(1834), Walter (1836) & Catherine(1838) all born London.  Catherine m Edward Reuben Strickland (5 children), she died in 1879 and Edward then married her cousin, ELLEN SULLIVAN, daughter of ELLEN CAREY & THOMAS SULLIVAN.

The children of ELLEN CAREY & THOMAS SULLIVAN were all born in Co. Cork:

WILLIAM (abt.1831-1908) died UK. Married Mary ? (b Ireland c1829), two daughters Bridget & Mary Ann. Mary? d before 1871. William m Mary Hayes (b Tipperary). They had one son, Thomas b1877, London.

MARY (abt.1840 -1902)   died UK.  Married Patrick Gleeson. No issue.

JOHN (abt.1844-1895)    died UK. Married Johanna Welsh, 5 children.

ELLEN (12/06/1853 - 11/12/1929) died Western Australia. Married Edward Reuben Strickland. 6 living children.

Ellen Snr died when Ellen Jnr was abt. 9yo (c1862) and Thomas then moved to London taking Ellen Jnr with him.

Hope the extra information is of use.

    Thank you.

  • Ref the post by Lmb, I can add to this line. Thomas Sullivan & Ellen Carey's son John Sullivan did marry Johanna Welsh on 7th May 1866 at St Mary's Catholic church, Turnham Green, Brentford, Middlesex. Their marriage certificate shows the Johanna Welsh was by marriage named McMahon & her condition is recorded as Widow. I believe she married John McMahon in 1864 and he died later that same year.

I believe John Sullivan & Johanna in fact had 6 children. John b 16th June 1866 (ggrandfather of my wife), Ellen, Honora (Nora), William, Catherine (Kate) & Elizabeth. All were born in Turnhan Green.

    Hope that helps someones research

  • Since my original post I've just been able to locate (via NLI Roman Catholic Parish records) the baptisms of Thomas Sulivan & Ellen Carey.  I also have the baptism record of their eldest son, William (my great grandfather) in 1833.  I'm hoping there may be records of his marriage to Mary Smith in the parish.  I'd also like to trace the burial record of Ellen Sullivan (nee Carey) c1862.

  • The marriage between William Sullivan & Mary Smith was in 1857 in Kensington. There is a record in the 1861 census of them lodging with his in-laws Patrick & Mary Gleeson in Chiswick. They had with them their 3 year old daughter Mary Ann Sullivan.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thank you!  Will order the certificate shortly.

I'm still in close contact with Kate's family and I also met Nora many years ago.
