Hi all!

I'm seeking any information about the Condon and Barry families in Kildorrery.

My great-grandfather William Garret Condon was born Feb. 25, 1844 in Oldcastletown, Kildorrery.  His parents were William and Catherine (Barry) Condon.  William Garret Condon emigrated during the US Civil War and served in the Army.  He later returned to Ireland and married Margaret Flynn and they settled in New London, Connecticut.

The elder William Condon died in 1901 and is buried in New London, but hadn't been living there.  Not sure where he lived at the time.  Any info or insights on the Condon or Barry families would be most welcome!

  • Hi Jim .

I have been doing a little research for you and hopefully it will be of help .

William Garrett Condon's  baptismal record states he was baptised in Kildorrery Church on the 25th of February 1844 .His

Mothers name is stated as Catherine Barry and Fathers name as William Condon .His sponsors were John Myers and

Catherine Hyde (possibly relations of the family) . And the  Priest who baptised him was named  Father Golden .

His death occoured at his home 26 West Coit  St ,Conn, after a lenghty illness ,and he was aged 77 years .And was formerly

employed by the City Water Dept.He was survived by his widow Mrs Margaret  Condon .And his 2 sons Thomas Condon a

train dispatcher ,and Edward Condon who was employed at the local submarine base .

The latter piece of info comes from an old New London newspaper .And as far as I can gather William passed away in 1923 .

Wishing you all the best in your further research .

  • Dear Jim,

I am researching a Condon family from Kildorrery that settled in Stonington CT. I am wondering if there could be a connection. My gr gr gr grandmother Ellen Condon immigrated to Stonington, CT where she lived with/near a Richard and Ellen (O'Donnell) Condon and Edward/Edmund and Mary (Colebert) Condon for several years until she married and moved to Yonkers, NY. Edmund Congden fought and died in the Civil War. I suspect that Richard Condon was Ellen's uncle as I recently discovered that her parents were John and Mary (Calahane/Cahillane) Condon but I am researching the uncle theory. I think there was also a James and Patrick Condon in the Stonington, CT /Westerly, RI area. They also used the spelling Congden for Condon.

I just recently found the John and Mary Condon family in Kildorrery. Ellen b.12/4/1842; Bridget b.10/15/1844; Richard b.10/31/1846 and John b.6/19/1857. It seems likely that there were other children during that 10 year gap which I will have to look into.

So if any of this seems to dovetail with your family please let me know. Happy searching! Pamela

  • Dear Pamela,

I wonder if Ellen's father, John Condon, could have been a brother of William James Condon, father of my g-grandfather, William Garret Condon, born 1844 in Kildorrery?  They must be related somehow, I would think.  Have you taken the Ancestry DNA test?  Thanks for posting the info!

    Best Regards,
