I have been sent a list for Murphy baptisms St Bartolomew's Church,Kildorrery in the 1860/7s.  The mother's name is Ellen Gallagher and father's Thomas Murphy.  All children born in Graigue.  All the births seem to fit except my great grandmother's name was 'Galwey' (on birth certificate).  Can someone direct me to where I can check the baptism details, please?

  • Dear Pat

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I had a look on rootsireland.ie and there are 4 baptisms listed for children of Thomas Murphy and Ellen ?Gallagher? ? Catherine (1861), Elizabeth (1863), Mary (1874) and Margaret (1877). Could you scan the image so we could have a look? If you wanted to see the original records you will have to contact the church and speak to the Parish Priest there.

The above is a subscription site so I am limited in what I can see.  By the looks of it the couple were married in Cork in 1857. The marriage records says ?Gallagher?. If you can fully access her marriage record it would at least include the father?s name and you could then check for her baptism

  • Hello Clare,

Thank you for replying to my message.  I attach the list of baptisms sent to me by one of your colleagues showing births for Thomas and Ellen.  I also attach my grandmother's  copy birth certificate which was wrongly transcribed in the 1940s and may even have the wrong name for the mother on the original!  Which site do I access the marriage for Thomas and Ellen , please?  Presumably you could find no such marriage for a Thomas Murphy and Ellen Galwey (I have tried!).

    Kind regards,  Pat

  • Hello Carmel,

Thank you very much for your help!  It would seem that the mystery of the Galway/Gallagher names may have been solved and that the family was one and the same!  Now to fit the piece of this jigsaw together further.  I have been on the rootsireland.ie site and quickly spent 45 euros (not always with the right results) so your help has been very much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Jan and Pat

  • Hello Lena,

So very nice of you to message me.  The Galwey/Gallaghers are actually my husband's family.  His gran was the Mary (1874) that you listed above.  I had delved into Roots Ireland and found the marriage for Thomas Murphy and Ellen Gallagher but, as you say, there is no record of the fathers' names - very frustrating.  I do now know which church so thank you very much for that.  We did visit Kildorrery a few years back and found a grave for a Thomas and Ellen Murphy (we think in the Molaga graveyard) but on our return a few years later it was no longer there.  Would you know if gravestones are removed after a certain amount of years if no relatives are found?  We had done no family research at that point and could not be sure they were our family.  We have only just found out that Ellen's name was Galwey as the birth certificate sent over to England in the 40s had her name wrongly transcribed from the original as 'Halvey'!  You can imagine the lost hours we have spent!  Anyway, I am now trying to find Ellen's family. Thomas Murphy's family will be a bigger problem as I have found another Thomas in Kildorrery.

    Thank you again, Jan

  • hi Jan

i do not think headstones are removed, we recorded all the graveyard headstones in the parish of

Kildorrery and there is a link to them on the Kildorrery Community website or you can go to historicgraves.ie.

as i said previously there are many families decended from thomas and ellen living in the parish

and in nearby parishes will get you connected to them as soon as i get  a contact no. or email

    best wishes with your research.

  • Thank you Lena.  I hadn't picked up that there were descendants of Thomas and Ellen living in the area.  I thought all their children had moved out of Ireland.  We would love to know if one of them stayed home as we cannot find where the ones who went to USA ended up!

We cannot find Thomas and Ellen's graves on the websites.  As I said earlier, we did find them once but we were not sure we had the right family.  Would there be burial records kept anywhere?

  • Jan and Pat, I have been researching the Kildorrery Gallagher family for quite a few years. I would love to have a fellow researcher to figure out some of the large Gallagher puzzle. If you are interested, you can email me at
janfortado2007"at" hotmail.com That is my alternate address, but occasionally my regular ISP doesn't accept messages from a few other ISP's so since I don't know your email address, it is better to use my alternate email address. I look forward to hearing from you. (also) Jan
