I would appreciate any information re. Ellen Galwey who married Thomas Murphy. They were living in Graigue in 1874 where my grandmother (Mary) was born.

Hi Jan
Thanks for the other messages.
Couldn't find birth/baptism for Ellen 1836 + - 2 years in Cork on www.rootsireland.ie/ or on www.irishgenealogy.ie/
There are 2 baptisms on rootsireland for Ellen Halvey - 1 is 1835 & the other 1837 both in Limerick.

Hello Co,
We have the birth registration certificate for Mary Murphy b. Graigue (dob 6.11.1864) with the mother shown as Ellen Halvey. I have just found an LDS birth for Mary Murphy - same father (Thomas) but the mother is Ellen Galwey. We think the transcriber of the original certificate in Mallow in 1944 could have copied down Halvey instead Galwey. My husband's father always said he had Galloway cousins in Ireland. Now begins the job of proving it. To make things more compicated another researcher has sent me birth records from St Bartholomews, Kildorrery with the mother listed as Ellen Gallagher! The children are the same names, baptisms slightly later than dob) except the two older sons are not listed, and all living in Graigue.
Thank you for your help.
Jan (very confused!!)

In 1901 census in Graigue Templemolaga Thomas Murphy retired farmer aged 72 and wife Ellen aged 65 given as residents of house 21. No Murphy shown in Graigue in 1852 Griffith Valuation or 1911 census

Hello Seamus,
Thank you for doing the research for us.
I have just found Thomas and Ellen on the 1901 census and I must assume they died before 1911. I think they are the right Murphy household but someone else has sent me a list of baptisms from St Bartholomews Church with the same names as Ellen's children but her maiden name was listed as Gallagher. I find it hard to believe that there were two Murphy families in such a very small village as Graigue with the same names/birth dates for their children. To make things even more difficult we think the copy of Mary's birth certificate sent over to England in the 1940s had the wrong surname for mother transcribed as I have now found an LDS entry with the name Galwey (not Halvey). The page no. in the Registry is the same. Some how I have to see the original birth entry to confirm. I was expecting problems with our Irish research (Murphy being such a common name) but not with the document we already have!!
Kind regards,
Jan
