I am descended from a Patrick Herbert and a Hannah or Honora Dunn, who were married on 16 Feb 1836 in Kildorrery, Cork. Patrick was leasing a tenement in Templemolaga Parish, Kilclooney Townland around 1853 per Griffith's Valuation. I have been able to locate that tenement on current maps. I live in the U.S. and I hope to visit the area in August 2016. I therefore would really appreciate it if someone in the parish could contact me, so I could provide them with more detailed information regarding the location of the tenement, and he or she could possibly help me get in touch with the current owners to perhaps coordinate a visit. I also would obviously appreciate any other information that anyone may have on these branches of the Herbert and Dunn families. Thank you!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
We do not have an active parish liaison for Templemolaga parish but do have a PL for Kildorrery parish. I will alert her regarding your message.

Thank you very much for the replies, Lena. Your information is really helpful!
I had found some of these records on the family, but not all of them. The child James of Patrick and Honora is new to me. Also the potential brother Michael is new. (FYI, Ellen Herbert was my great grandmother.)
Regarding the site of the Patrick Herbert tenement, working from Griffith's and the Ordance Survey maps I have been able to identify on Google Earth where I believe their dwelling was located. I will upload some images from Google Earth that should help you identify the property.

The 40,000 foot view is intended to give you a high level orientation of the Patrick Herbert tenement vis a vis the towns of Kildorrery and Mitchelstown. The 10,000 foot level begins to show the surrounding roads. And the placeholder on the 1,500 foot view shows the approximate location of their dwelling based again on the Ordnance Survey maps.
Please let me know if these come through, and what you think!

Attached FilesPatrick Herbert, Griffith's Valuation.pdf (307.22 KB)Ordnance Map - 54 = 49.png (227.76 KB)
Lena,
I am uploading some back-up on the location of the Patrick Herbert dwelling.
The first attachment is Patrick Herbert in Griffith's Valuation (he is the seventh individual from the bottom). It states that the map reference for his dwelling is 54b.
The related Ordnance Survey map on the AskAboutIreland site does not include a reference to a 54 tenement. But I reviewed the series of draft maps for the parish on another site, and found that at some point the 54 reference was changed to 49. The second attachment is an image of that map (54/49 is in the lower right quadrant). It also shows the location of dwelling "b".
I then went back to the AskAboutIreland site, and found tenement 49 on the map. I used the tool on the map site to overlay a modern map on the historical map, which showed me the location of modern day roads. I used that information to then locate the dwelling on Google Earth, which images I uploaded yesterday.
Hope this is of interest!

That is terrific news, Lena. Thank you so much for making the effort. I will keep you posted on our travel plans as they take shape (per my initial message, we are currently thinking our trip will be in August).
Also, I agree there may be some connection between my ancestors and the Michael Herbert and Anne Madden you identified. Could you share with me the date of their marriage, and the date their child James was baptized? Thanks!

Thank you!
Are there any Herberts or Dunns still living in the area? In particular, are the owners or persons living at the site of the Herbert tenement Herberts or Dunns or their descendants? It would obviously be very exciting to find some cousins in the area.

Hi Chuck
There are no Herbert's in the area now but there are Dunne families in nearby townlands.
I don't think the family are related to Herbert's or Dunnes Wrong we have 1 family of Herbert's but they came from
Killfinnane in Co Limerick. Best wishes Lena

Lena,
I hope this finds you well.
I was able to visit Ireland earlier this month, but with the press of work I could only come for a week, and I spent my time primarily in the north, because unfortunately a contact there is in very poor health.
But my plan is to return for a week next summer, and this time visit the south, including Kildorrery!
If you can share your email address with me (I don't know if that is permitted on this board), I can stay in touch with you off the board, including next year as our plans take shape.
Also, in the meantime, if you or the current owners of the Herbert tenement could check the spots I identified in the attachments to my earlier messages to see if there is any remnant of a dwelling there and, if so, send or upload to this board some pictures of the remnants, I would be very appreciative. Thanks!
Best regards,
Chuck Washburn
