Dear Kildorrery community, I am looking for information on my husbands 2x Great Grandfather who was Walter Henry Birmingham. Walter signed up to the Army in 1867 and records show that he wss born about 1848 in the town of Doneraile, Kildorrery, Cork, Ireland.

We believe that Walter Henry Birmingham's father was Walter Birmingham and that his mother was either Honorah or Hannah. If anyone can shed any light on this family I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Regards

  • GeneJeanie:

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1848 baptism for a Walter Birmingham with parents Walter and Honora. The baptism was in the Glanworth RC church which is to the east of Doneraile and Kildorrery.

    Roots is a subscriptions site.

Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching.

I also checked the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Cork and there was only one Walter Birmingham listed and he was in St. Finbars parish which is in Cork city. Maybe this is a different Walter Birmingham.

  • Dear Roger, thank you very much for your response. I just joined the site today, and I was very happy to get a response so quickly. Although I have been conducting family history for a while (mainly Scottish), tracing Irish family history is fairly new to me. So I am very happy for the advice you have given me. I don't know if I'll be able to wait for the free search on rc parish records, thanks for letting me know about the Roots site. Kind regards Jean

  • Hello Roger.

There seems to be several Walter Berminghams about this area during this time period.

I am researching the Bermingham family of the Kildorrery area. I know that 'a' Walter Bermingham had a daughter Margaret. & (PER family records) This Margaret married her cousin Michael Bermingham who was the son of my elder Mathew Bermingham and Mary Dougherty.

Mathew Bermingham and Mary Doughtety/Doherty my ancestors by their daughter Bridget Bermingham.  Bridget married to John Murphy.

I assume that my elder Mathew Bermingham was the brother of the Walter Bermingham listed above.  Apparently my elder Mathew & Walter had a brother John, and these 3 brothers may be the sons of a Thomas Bermingham. I am trying to prove all of this.

It seems that my elder Mathew d. 7 Jan1888 @ Ballylough CO Cork and his wife was present at the time of his death.  I have no idea what became of Mary after that.

I would like to reach out to any Berminghams in this area with hopes of trying to solve some of my puzzle.  All leads appreciated.
