I checked on the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1835 baptism for a John Coghlan ( or variant) in the Kildorrery RC church. Parents were Patrick and Johanna.

I did some further checking and found eight other baptismal records for childen with parents Patrick and Johanna Coghlan in the Kildorrery church.

Also, the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a Johanna Coghlan in Springvale townland so Patrick likely died before 1852. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/kildorrery.htm

    Catherine 1826

    Arthur 1829

    Johanna 1831

    Mary 1833

    John 1835

    Honor 1836 (likely died young)

    Thomas 1837

    Honor 1838

    Patrick 1841

Later this summer, the National Library of Ireland plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching. You may want to look at the Kildorrery records at that time. Roots is a subscription site.

  • About ten years ago I did some genealogy research in the National Library in Dublin for a cousin who was a descendant of the Coughlan?s of Cullenagh, Co. Cork. As part of my research I had jotted down information on any Coughlan/Coughlin name that I came across in the Kildorrery Catholic Church records and the Kildorrery Civil parish records. I came across a number of Coughlan/Coughlin families living in the Kildorrery area in the 1800s. My guess is that if went back far enough, all of the Coughlans/Coughlins in the area probably all related. Anyway, here is some information on records where the Coughlan was from Springvale:

Bryan Coughlan married Margaret Golden on Feb. 10, 1854 (per Kildorrery Church records). I found four children of this marriage based on civil birth records. Civil records for Catholics only began in 1864, so there could have been other children born between 1854 and 1864. They lived in Springvale and later in Meadstown in the Kildorrery parish.
    08/06/1865 Arthur Coughlan
    10/30/1868 Margaret Coughlan
    03/02/1870 Patrick Coughlan
    08/19/1872 Bryan Coughlan

John Coughlan of Springvale & Mary Roche of Oldcastletown (information obtained from civil birth record for their son, John).
12/17/1865 John Coughlan (per civil record)

Patrick Coughlan (49), son of Arthur Coughlan of Springvale married & Mary Roche, daughter of Edmond Roche of Springvale, Location: Kildorrery RC Church on Aug. 25, 1868
Witnesses: Michael Brennan & Mary Fitzgerald
    Source: Kildorrery Church Marriage Record
They must have later lived in Quitrent, Farahy (now part of Kildorrery Civil Parish) since I found that they had a son, who was born there.
    04/11/1870 Arthur Coughlan

I listed the above dates in the US format, i.e., the first two numbers are the month.

While none of the above are in the timeframe of the John Coughlan, but they could have been descendants of siblings of your John.

I have a suggestion for you. When I was searching for my mother?s ancestors and I came across the townland where my grandmother was born. I then looked in the Irish phone directory and found families with the same surname still living there. I contacted them and turns out they were cousins. It might be worth a try to see if any Coughlan?s are still living in Springvale or the nearby townlands.

By the way, I spent many days looking at headstones in Calvary Cemetery in NYC tracing my ancestors.

Just before I was about to send this, I saw that Roger McDonnell posted some information on John. I did have information on the marriage of what may be your John Coughlan?s parents. The townland wasn?t mentioned so I didn?t previously include it in the above
04/26/1834 Patrick Coughlan & Joanna Duane (dispensation)*
Witnesses: Richard Hanly & John Duane
Source: Kildorrery RC Church Marriage Record
(* Dispensation could mean they were closely related or underage.)

    Good luck with your search!

    Hi,

I also have Coughlans in my family tree.

Hanora Coughlan of Cullenagh, was my great grandmother, she married John Leonard of Ballindangan on 7th February 1885.  Her father is John Coughlan also of Cullenagh, and was deceased at time of marriage.  He was listed as a farmer.

I think I have just found her baptism, -

Honora Coughlan, Killenach, Castletown, baptised 1st April, 1857 ( she claims to be 40 in 1901 census so fairly close!)

Parents listed as John Coughlan & Margaret O'Brien sponsors - Bridget Coughlan & Edmond Carroll

also two baptisms for her two brothers -

Thomas Coughlan, Cullinaugh, baptised 6th June, 1854      Parents John Coughlan & Margaret O'Brien

Sponsors - Thomas Coughlan & Honora Duane

Patrick Coughlan, Cullinaugh, baptised same day as Thomas ( could they be twins?) Same Parents

Sponsors Daniel Murphy & Ellen Coughlan

I have now found a marriage for John Coughlan to Margaret O'Brien, Killavullen, on 6th July, 1844

witnesses James O'Brien & David Magner

I found a headstone on historic graves for Arthur Coughlan of Cullinough who died March 24th 1842 erected by his sons Richard and John.    Would love to know if Arthur was my John's father and Honora's grandfather???

There are four headstones listed together for Coughlans in Kildorrery -

    Nos. 227 to 231

    No. 230 transcription -

IHS/Erected/by Richard & John/ Coughlan in memory/ of their father/ Arthur Coughlan/ late of Cullinough/ Died March 24th 1842/Aged 75 years/May his soul/ Rest in Peace/ Amen/  Here lies the remains of my dear/ Father Richard Coughlan of/ Flemingstown who died Sept. the  23rd/ 1853 Aged 67 years also my /  beloved brother Partick Coughlan/ who departed this life on the/ 17th August 1860 aged 26 years/ May their souls Rest in Peace/

I would be delighted if anybody could confirm who John Coughlan's father and mother were.

    Thanks in advance

    Mary
