My maternal g-grandfather was Patrick Ryan, a brother of Mary Ryan Casey. He emigrated to the US, about 1860, and ultimately  settled in Corry, Erie County, Pennsylvania. I have copies of three letters that Mary Casey sent to her brother in 1908. She was writing to Patrick because she wanted to contest the will written by her brother John. Ohe of the letters had "Meadstown, Kildorrery, Cork" at the top of it.

I would love to know anything about the origins of this Ryan family. Patrick, my g-grandfather, was first married to Mary Foley. They had three children, Edward, Margaret and Mary. Edward was about 9 years old on the 1870 Pennsylvania census but does not appear on the 1880 census. Mary Foley Ryan died in 1872 and there is a record on Find-a-Grave for Mary and dau.s "all on one stone." I suspect she may have died giving birth to twins who did not survive.

In 1875 Patrick had married my g-grandmother, Sarah Lyons, and had three children with her: William, Sarah, and John. I am descended from Sarah.

Sincerely,

Sarah O'Hare Amy

  • Lena, it is delightful to hear from you. Without the letters from Mary to Patrick, I would have no idea where in Ireland to focus any research. I've been doing research since 1999 but it's been mostly on my father's side, the O'Hare family. I would love to know more about my mother's side.

Mary mentioned these names in her letters and I think they may be siblings of her: John, who was apparently the youngest of eleven children, Garret, James and Bridgie. She also said that she had seven children, three boys and four girls: Apparently two of her children, Mary and Patrick, had moved to Australia.  Was Mary's husband named John Casey? She talked about her brother Patrick dying within just two months of John's death.

Do you know if Mary Foley's family lived near the Ryans? It almost appears from U.S. records that Patrick may have emigrated with the Foley family.

I am looking forward to hearing from you as you have the opportunity. Thanks so very much for your response.

    Sincerely, Sarah O'Hare Amy

  • Lena, I forgot to mention that you can contact me by email at the following address:

I didn't receive notice of your response until today and I think you wrote it on the 6th. Communication might be a bit faster via direct email. Either way, this board or direct email, is fine with me.

    Sincerely, Sarah
