Hello there, I am trying to find information on my great great grandfather Michael Curtin who was born in Kildorrey in 1856. He sailed to New Zealand at the age of 19 (1874-1876). Any information would be appreciated. Kind regards, Sue

  • Sue:

I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1856 baptismal record for a Michael Curtin. The record was in the Killavullen RC church rrecords and the parents were David and Ellen. ( There are seven other baptismal records for this couple between 1846-1866.)

I did not find any baptisms in Kildorrery parish in this timeframe.

I also found an 1856 marriage record for a David Curtin married to an Ellen in Killavullen church

Killavullen RC parish is to the southwest of Kildorrery parish and Roots does have records for Kildorrery back to 1824.

Not sure if this is your Michael Curtin.

    Roots is a subscription site.

Later thsi summer the National Library of Ireland will be placing the RC parish registers online for free searching.

  •  Hi Sue.  My name is Steven Curtin, from Blenheim , Marlborough, New Zealand. The Michael Curtin you speak of is my Great Grandfather. The information I have is that he landed in Lyttleton, Christchurch about 1876 ish (I am still trawling the shipping lists looking to see when he landed.)and moved inland to Rangiora where he worked as a labourer. We think he married Annie Doherty about Septemberish 1877 and they had just the one child, John Patrick Curtin who was born 25/6/1878. he then went on to 9 Children, one of which was my father my father. So we could be related?   Cheers, Steve.
