Hello there, I am searching for information on my great great grandfather Michael Curtin. Born 1856 in Kildorrey he sailed for New Zealand at the age of 19 (1874-1876). If there is any information on his background we would appreciate your assistance. I am also aware the surname Curtin is quite common so hope the sailing timeframe may help. Kind regards, Sue

Hi Sue
On www.rootsireland/ie (subscription site)there is a baptism record of Michael Curtain 1856 in Cork but the parish is KILLAVULLEN.
I couldn't find a Kildorrery record for him in any year. Did it say he was born there or from there?
Griffiths Valuation (free) has 400+ Curtins in Cork in 1851 but none in Kildorrery.

Hi Col
Thank you for your fast response. The parish could well have been Killavullen - I only have Kildorrey but that is not necessariy correct and doesn't indicate if he was born there or lived there later in life. Seeing the number of listings for the name Curtin (let alone the Michaels) in Cork in 1851 is daunting as I don't information on any background family for Michael only that he married Annie Doherty/Dockerty and that may well have happened in New Zealand. Annie was born 1859 Ballindrate, Donegall, Ireland but I have no other information on her either. Michael and Annie's son John Patrick Curtin caused a rift in the family with his philandering ways so there was a split. I'll try to branch out sideways and see if I can find any relatives here. I'll also try the rootsireland site. NZ does not have census records on file as apparently they were not kept for posterity! This a great shame. Thank you Col!

Hi Sue
I notice Roger has also responded to your other listing.
ancestry has a Daniel John Curtin born c 1847 (no parents' names given) Cork married Mary Sheahan Newmarket Cork 18 Dec 1877 & died NZ c 1926. tree owner is Sheahan10
I checked rootsireland for this record but there wasn't one in Killavullen or Kildorrery!
A good site for Cork records is irishgenealogy.ie which is free
