Hello,

I have been looking into my Irish ancestry, and this has led me to you.

My great-grandfather, William Moroney, was baptized in Kildorrey on July 10, 1869.  His father's name was William, and his mother's name was Alice Tobin.

I know a good deal about my great-grandfather's history in America.  He came here on December 8, 1889, out of the port of Queenstown, Ireland, when he was 20.

I am curious to know what information can be found about my great-great-grandfather, William Moroney, and my great-great-grandmother, Alice Tobin. Does Kildorrey keep any historical records, and how can I get access to them?

Please note that although my name is Maroney, their name is MORONEY.  The spelling was changed sometime in the 1920s.

Thanks and regards

Eric Maroney

I found baptismal index records for two other Moroney children on www.familysearch.org  Michael born 7/1/1871 and Mary born  3/31/1874. I checked the 1901 census and found a William and Alice Moroney living with their son Patrick (age 20) in Ballynahalisk townland in St. Nathlash civil parish which is just below Kildorrey civil parish. I did not find them in the 1911 census so possibly they died in the intervening years. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Derryvillane/Ballynahalisk/1152160/

I looked for a marriage index record for William and Alice with no success so possibly they married before civil registration began in 1864.

  • Are there any records in Kildorrey relating to William Moroney?  I would like to try and trace my Irish ancestry as far as possible.

    Thanks

The Catholic Church in Kildorrery is St. Bartholomew's and goes back to 1839. I also read in a reference book that Kildorrery RC records are available back to 1803. I could not find any contact info for St. Bartholomews but maybe you can find an e-mail or phone number. Also, maybe someone local will see this message and help out.

  • Hello Eric ,

I have had a quick look through some records for you and have located a child baptised on 29th June 1863 in St Bartholmews Church Kildorrery .His name was John Moroney .His fathers name was William and his mothers name was Ally  Tobin  (possibly Alice and shortened ) Their address is given as Rockmills which is in the Roman Catholic Parish of Kildorrery.Could this child be a brother of your great -great grandfather.

Wishing you the best of luck in your search .

  • Thank you for searching through the records.  That is probably a brother to my great-grandfather, William Moroney. From other records, William Moroney and Alice Tobin had four children:

    William Moroney, 1870, baptized Kildorrey

    Michael Moroney, 1871, baptized Kildorrey

    Mary Moroney, 1874, baptized Kildorrey

Patrick Moroney, living with William and Alice Moroney during the 1901 Census, and listed as 20 years old, so birthdate around 1881.  As stated above, they were living in St. Nathlash civil parish, just below Kildorrey civil parish.

Now you have found John Moroney, 1863, baptized Kildorrey.

Can you find any orginal records that can help me find out anything about my great-great grandfather, William, or his wife, Alice Tobin?

Is there any chance you can scan any document you think would help me and email it to me?

I thank you for your time.

    Eric
