My maternal great grandfather came to Scotland around 1860. He settled in Dundee where he married a Catherine Logan at St Mary's Church on 31st December 1869 (Hogmany).

He was born at Springvale, Kildorrery in early 1842 and was baptised there on 11 February that year. His father was James Noonan and his mother Johanna Duane. James Noonan was baptised in Cahirduggan, Doneraile on 3rd April 1819. Johanna Duane was baptised in Cornahinch, Doneraile on 10 March 1824. They were married in Kildorrery on 17th March 1840 and had a family of six children John (my maternal great grandfather0 1842, Thomas (1844), Denis (1847), Catherine (1849), Margaret (1852) and Johanna (1854). James Noonan is mentioned in John's death certificate at Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland as being a Land Steward.

Apart from John coming to Scotland, I have failed to find any further leads with regards my family in Kildorrery. No other members came to Scotland. Whether they came to England or Wales, I have no idea. Perhaps they had to emigrate.

I would be most interested in any information that would add to my family story.

I am a 66 year old Scot who has Irish antecedents on both my father's side of my family and my mother's side of my family. The Nolans came from Longford, County Longford and the Noonans from Kildorrery, County Cork.

  • Dear Grangeburn

We are updating our files and have discovered that we didn't follow up on your query. We have found John and all his siblings on our records.  There are a few Noonan families presently in the parish and we will check with them to see if we can find any link. We will get back to you.

Hi Brenda, John's siblings I have found to be: Thomas Nunan, baptised 24th March 1844 - Denis Noonan, baptised 19th October 1847 - Catherine Noonan, baptised 21st August 1849 - Margaret Noonan, baptised 24th March 1852 and Johanna Noonan baptised 8th October 1854. Do these match your findings?

Hi! It has been a long time since I last got in touch. It seems that your dates for postings have been misplaced. I first got in touch over a year ago, but it seems that this more recent according to your records. Perhaps an upgrade to your systems has produced this anomaly?

Anyway, my research on the Kildorrery details have taken somewhat of a back seat and this has led me to further my enquiries over here in Scotland. The diaspora continues after my great grandfather's arrival in Dundee and various branches have been discovered in Blackburn, Lancashire; East Hendred, Oxfordshire; and South Africa. This has led me to think that perhaps great grandfather John Noonan's siblings, or even parents, settled in other parts of what was the then UK. Did they move to these areas? Perhaps Ireland Reaching out could help in this regard? Even if it is just to find John's siblings. Thanking you.

  • Hello Grangeburn, I have not looked at my family history findings for a while but just typed in "Noonan" tonight on the off- chance of some new tit-bits and found your request for information on John Noonan born 1842 in Kildorrery who came to Dundee in the 1860s.  I am not related to him myself but he was my late husband's great-grandfather.  I can give you the story of what happened to him and some of his descendants in Dundee.  I also have a photograph of him and his wife Catherine(Logan) in old age of which I could send you a copy.   I spent a long time some years ago researching this family and am thrilled to have his birthplace confirmed.  If you want me to send you the information I have, we would have to get in touch.  Maybe you could text me your address if I give you my phone number.  Let me know via this message board.

  • Hi I have not looked at this website for a while. Tonight I found your reply to my post (9th July 2016). I have not been researching the Family Tree for some time. Your reply does not have a username. Maybe I know you? I am Michael Nolan. I have met several members of the Noonan family in Dundee.

  • Hello Michael,

My husband was Ronald Coleman.  His paternal great-grandfather was John Noonan.  Patrick Coleman married John Noonan's eldest daughter Johanna in 1897 in Dundee.  She died in 1919 aged 48.  They had 10 children including my husband's father, also Patrick Coleman.  Which member of the Noonan family are you related to?  You obviously know more about the family in Ireland than I do and I'm sorry I have nothing to contribute about John's siblings.  All the information I have I got from Monsignor Ben Donachie, my husband's cousin.  Have you seen the photograph I am talking about?  It was taken outdoors, John is standing, his wife Catherine (Logan) seated.  They are dressed for an occasion, a wedding perhaps.  Have you any photographs?  Also, do you know if John Noonan has a gravestone in Dundee?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    Margaret Coleman

So your husband's father Patrick was born in '***'side, Dundee on 6th September1903. He married Norah Robertson on the 9th January 1935. The ceremony was conducted by Father Jphn Noonan, his uncle. There first child was born in December 1935 - your husband? I do not know much more about their offspring I am afraid.

My grannie was Elizabeth Noonan, old John's daughter (johanna's sister). I remember Rita Coleman, vaguely, I met Ben Donnachie once in Dundee. It was a tenement building, I think?? I was young about 7 years old. (I was born in 1953). Ben died recently I believe. He was the head man at Blair's I think when my cousin (no blood relation to the Noonans) was studying there - William Nolan is now the Bishop of Galloway. He has had a heart attack recently and is now recovering.

I live in France part of the year, part of the year in Wishaw. I was in Dundee twice recently. Once meeting the last of the Noonans - Gerard and Marie.

I am next back in Scotland at the end of September, but only for a couple of day. I have plenty of information on the Noonans, and some of the large Coleman family. In the meantime, e-mail me at
